DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the overall supervision of the ADG/RAF and direct supervision of FAO Sub regional Coordinator (SFE) as well as the technical guidance of the technical officer in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), and in close consultation with other concerned staff, the Junior Professional Officer will contribute to ensure integrating climate change issues within the work of other technical officers’ in the Sub regional Office. In particular, the incumbent will:

• assess the situation of countries of SFE and current and planned development on Climate Change related to forestry and agriculture (policies, strategies, action plans, activities) and produce a database on these elements;
• assist in providing a set of global and country visions of where SFE will put its efforts and energies in the coming 3-5 years and in the shorter term;
• review and update the draft climate change strategy for the Eastern African countries;
• contribute to the planning of programs, projects and activities at the sub regional and country level related to adaptation and mitigation of perverse effects from climate to agriculture, livestock, fisheries, forestry, land and other land uses; support platforms that will coordinate stakeholders for scaling up Climate Smart Agriculture best practices, technologies and other efforts that contribute in building climate change resilience at the national and sub regional levels;
• monitor, advise on and interact with existing FAO projects on Climate Change, and projects that have a Climate Change component, including projects on conservation agriculture/climate smart-agriculture;
• assist the SFE’s Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) in liaising with the Arab Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on Climate Change issues and providing other office support on climate- change related issues as may be requested;
• sustain the interaction on Climate Change with other UN agencies in Ethiopia, other SFE countries, and favour linkages with FAO headquarters, FAO’s Regional Office for Africa (RAF) and other FAO Sub regional offices in Africa; and
• perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
• Advanced university degree in environment, natural resources management, forestry or in other topic related to climate change
• One year of experience in climate change, agriculture, land-related issues, or field related to the work of the Organization.
• Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Russian, Arabic or Chinese

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
• Relevant work experience in climate change issues related to Agriculture, Forestry or other Land uses. Experience in Africa and notably in Eastern or Southern Africa would be a strong asset
• Ability to plan and organize own work, deliver results and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work effectively within a team, supporting others, and fostering a positive team environment
• Commitment to continual improvement of knowledge, skills and abilities
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to write clearly and concisely technical documents
