Base salary dependent on experience  – starting from USD 45,000-50,000 per annum. Total salary & international benefits package circa USD 84,000-93,000 per annum (tax free*)

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit an adaptation scientist to contribute to its research on climate change adaptation in livestock systems in Africa.  The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the jobholder will contribute to deliverables for the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) (www.ccafs.cgiar.org).

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to research on supporting adaptation decisions by individuals, households and decision making bodies at local, district and national levels, including incentives for behavior change;
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative research on the development and use of tools to support adaptation decisions, including scenarios, household models, and social learning methods;
  • Conduct tradeoff and risk analysis around behavior change or adoption of “climate smart” or “climate friendly” agricultural interventions;
  • Conduct monitoring and evaluation/ impact assessments of interventions on adaptation outcomes;
  • Publish research results and present research at conferences;
  • Assist with resource mobilization;
  • Organize workshops with multiple stakeholders.
Requirements
  • PhD in any of the following fields: Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Development Studies, Economics or other relevant fields.  An MSc plus five years of relevant experience can substitute for the PhD;
  • Dissertation must have focused on livestock OR dryland agricultural systems in a developing country;
  • At least 3 years post-graduate experience in research on adaptation to climate change in a developing country;
  • Knowledge of literature on climate change adaptation and drought risk management;
  • Knowledge of mixed and extensive livestock systems, natural resource management and/or agricultural development problems in the tropics;
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following:  social learning, decision making under uncertainty, risk analysis, impact assessment, monitoring and evaluation.
Post location: The position is expected to be based Nairobi or Addis Ababa.  Specific location may be negotiable.

Position level: The position is Scientist Level 1, dependent on qualifications and experience.

Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
