Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal

Base salary from $55,000 per annum depending on skills and experience, with an attractive international benefits package (tax free*). Total package circa $93,000 per annum.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Market and Capacity Development Manager to build and execute a market and capacity development strategy to support efforts to bring to scale its Index-Based Livestock Insurance (IBLI) agenda.  As a member of the team that designs, developments, implements and evaluates ILRI’s award-winning IBLI program (www.ilri.org/ibli), the assignment involves working with the suite of IBLI partners that range from research leaders, our research-for-development partners, commercial entities, NGOs, government agencies, and target communities to manage the transition from pilot to scale-up.

The successful candidate will bring expertise and a proven track record working on the interface of development, research and business to design and introduce the institutions, policies and support services needed to catalyze IBLI market development and build a critical mass of informed clients. This will be achieved both through personally implementing the relevant activities and through cultivating collaborations with strategic partners to support various identified implementation needs.  The marketing and capacity development strategy will encompass the ability to assess and cater to the capacity development needs for key agents across the IBLI market chain as well as to asses and develop the market systems that are consistent with the needs and context of the target population.

Responsibilities:
With the support of the program team and key partners, lead the conceptualization and design of a market development and capacity building strategy based on an assessment of the IBLI experience, the deficiencies and opportunities for catalysing the market, the capacity development needs along key nodes in the system and particular characteristics of the target clientele;
Lead the IBLI markets and capacity development implementation agenda. This will involve innovations in program strategy to bring on board new, creative ideas (and partners) for implementation, contributions to relevant policy and regulatory design, and the development and execution of a strategy for further growth and outreach;
Develop and manage partnerships that add both programmatic and strategic value to the implementation agenda and help achieve program objectives;
Design training programs and training materials (lesson plans, manuals, PPTs and Prezis, ToT materials, individual and group face-to-face training activities, scripts for multimedia products, etc.) based on proven adult learning techniques, using appropriate design, content and technologies adapted to the specific needs of agents identified for capacity development;
Support team members and partners in coordinating and delivering of capacity development programs as needed;
Develop a monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress and revise strategy accordingly;
Publish and disseminate knowledge and insights gains in relevant channels and manage the team’s internal and external communication efforts.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:
Advanced degree in development-related Social Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Communication or related fields;
At least 5 years exposure in the disciplinary area, e.g., project management / market development / education & training / social science   – with experience working in developing countries;
Demonstrated ability to develop and rally complex partnerships around a common objective, and managing the deployment and assessment of innovative programs; experience working with public/private partnerships a plus.
A proven skill-set in the development of learning courses, training and technical assistance materials, needs assessments, and other capacity development products.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Facilitation, presentation, and/or publication experience a plus.
Familiarity with aspects of livestock production, and/or agricultural systems in developing countries a plus.
Post location: This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Position level: The position is Scientist/Research level 2 – dependent on skills and experience.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
