Regional Director, South East Asia
The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (www.ciat.cgiar.org) works to reduce hunger and poverty, and improve human health in the tropics through research aimed at increasing the ecoefficiency of agriculture. CIAT is a member of the CGIAR Consortium (www.cgiar.org), a global research partnership working many partners for a food secure future. The Center’s research focuses on improving key crops (cassava, common bean, rice, and tropical forages); reversing soil and land degradation; and using information to foster better decisions about issues such as climate change and environmental management. Headquartered near Cali, Colombia, CIAT has regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and Hanoi, Vietnam, with staff posted in other developing countries as well.
CIAT in Southeast Asia has focused during the past three decades on research on tropical forages and cassava, mainly in smallholder rain fed systems, particularly in in the Mekong countries. In addition to Cassava and Tropical Forages (CIAT Agrobiodiversity Research Area) we are increasing active conducting
research for development with our Decision And Policy Analysis and Soils Research Areas in crosscutting issues of linking farmers to markets, climate change, and soil, land, and water management. A major focus of our work is to continue to strengthen research partnerships in the region, particularly with Vietnam and China, to expand engagement in Burma, and to maintain, re-engage, or develop linkages with partners beyond the Mekong area.
The Regional Office is responsible for leading the regional strategy, fundraising, implementing programs, monitoring progress and reporting results for CIAT’s global research areas portfolio. The Regional Office
also ensures coherence and strategic alignment between country-level engagements, regional priorities and global initiatives, particularly CGIAR global programs in which CIAT participates.
Responsibilities:
The Regional Director is responsible leading and coordinating the regional program and all its component projects and the team. This position is responsible fund raising (donor intelligence, donor engagement, proposal development, and stewardship/communications) and the management (identification, implementation and monitoring) of partnerships. The Regional Director ensures that the team follows the institutional framework for designing strategies and delivers high-quality products that lead to agreed outcomes. This position interacts strongly with Research Programs at Headquarters.
Lead the development and implementation of country-level and regional-level strategies and resource mobilization efforts to ensure that research contributes to the achievement of development outcomes.
Strategically position CIAT in the region and ensure integrity and alignment among CIAT’s activities.

Requirements
PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, International Development or other related fields with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience post-PhD
Good track record in program coordination, proposal development and fund raising
Ability to liaise with key global and regional research partners and donors
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as effective interpersonal skills
Strong strategic planning skills, and the ability to develop and deliver strategic initiatives
Experience in leading and managing a multi-disciplinary and dynamic team of researchers and development practitioners, and the associated human resource and financial management
Excellent written and spoken English
Willingness and ability to travel internationally and regionally
Terms of Employment
The Regional Director will report to the Director General and will be based at CIAT Office in Hanoi, Vietnam. The contract will be for an initial three (3) year period, subject to a probation period of six (6)
months, renewable depending on performance and funding. CIAT offers internationally competitive
