Founded in 2001, Carolina for Kibera (CFK) exists to offer motivated individuals in the Kibera slum tools and opportunities to become healthy, educated, and self-sufficient. With a focus on youth, CFK’s first program, a community-based sports program, promotes ethnic, gender and religious cooperation in Kibera. CFK has since expanded to serve the community in a holistic manner through a network of programs in the areas of health, social and economic development-- offering low-cost high-quality medical care, sexual health education, entrepreneurship training, and adolescent girls’ empowerment, among other initiatives. About the Position
Over the past 14 years, Carolina for Kibera has pioneered a low-cost, high-impact model of participatory development program development and built a brand that is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. CFK is ready to accelerate its growth -- launching new initiatives to respond to burgeoning needs and sharing CFK's successes and model with the international community.
We are looking for a creative, hands-on Communication Officerto further build the CFK brand to gain visibility and support, nationally and internationally. The Communication Officer will be responsible for the overall management of the CFK brand and the creation and execution of an external communication strategy.
This is a position that involves frequent interaction with Kibera community members, the senior management team, and external media partners. The successful candidate will be comfortable and successful in interacting with all of these stakeholders. This is a full-time position based in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya.
External Communication Management:
Planning, writing and organizing monthly eNewsletters, annual reports, blog updates, press releases in coordination with the US communications team and heads of departments
Support program staff in documentation of CFK activities, including attending program activities, writing stories and taking pictures
Generation of new media leads in Kenya and ability to leverage high visibility opportunities
Internal Communication Management:
Maintain internal policy documents as they are updated and ensure that they are well understood by all staff
Maintain an accurate master calendar of activities across all programs
Work with program staff to identify and capture stories of impact
Manage the archival system of pictures, stories, videos, newsletters, etc produced by CFK in a given year
Visitor Management:
Be the lead communicator for visitors to CFK
Manage the calendar of visitors, ensuring relevant staff are aware when visitors are around
Organize and support visits
Qualifications:
Completed a University degree preferably in a related field (e.g., Media studies, Communications or Public Relations)
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated success running a communication strategy
Must be a strong writer and effective communicator
Self-driven, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
Must be computer literate
Must have working knowledge of cameras
Firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space
