GIS Consultant
Consultancy to train a core group of staff to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS)Organisation Caritas Switzerland (CACH) is a non-governmental aid agency and a member of Caritas Internationalis. CACH works worldwide and adheres to international humanitarian principles (NGO code of conduct). CACH encourages people to take charge of their own fate and does this by promoting local initiatives that sustainably improve the living conditions of the socially disadvantaged, advocating the conservation of natural resources, supporting civil conflict resolution and peace building, cooperating with local partners and strengthening their own commitments.
CACH works in Eastern Africa and the Horn of Africa with a focus on education,
strengthening of civil society, food security and water, hygiene and sanitation. We operate an office in Nairobi, have Country Offices in Somaliland (Hargeisa) and South Sudan (Torit) and a Representative in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa).
CACH seeks a highly experienced GIS Specialist to implement a short-term mission; an equivalent of two months to visit the four Country Offices (Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Somaliland) and train a core group of staff to use GIS and to use/publish/print maps.
Position GIS Specialist (Consultant)
Reporting to Deputy Head of Kenya Office
Location Nairobi, Kenya
Start 13th April 2015
Duration Two months
Final report 31st August 2015
Key tasks & responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Head of Kenya Office, over the period of two months, the consultant will be expected travel to four CACH country office to provide on-the job training for core staff and produce project specific maps for each country office.
Specifically:
• Train a core group of staff to use GIS and to use/publish/print maps;
• Develop initial project maps; and
• Support country offices identify institutions in each country where they can source GIS information/resources
The GIS expert will closely work with knowledge management focal persons in each
country and selected staff.
Competencies
A highly experienced GIS Specialist is required to provide short term training:
• Extensive knowledge and solid professional experience and training using GIS;
• Experience in designing and providing training in GIS to NGOs staff; and
• Strong communication and facilitation skills and ability to establish good working
relationships
