Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. This post is located in the Somalia programme.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager, UN Joint Programme on Local Governance and Decentralized Service Delivery for Somalia (JPLG), the Intern will provide logistics, financial and administrative support to the implementation of the JPLG projects and programme and will have the opportunity to learn elements of project management, administration and finance in addition to issues around the thematic areas of the projects to complement his/her theoretical studies.
The intern will be expected to carry out the following tasks:
- Support project implementation: maintaining and monitoring of project implementation database
- Support project reporting by consolidating monthly project status reports (technical) and follow-up with team members for prompt submission
- Support programme financial management and reporting by reviewing, analyzing and consolidating projects financial reports monthly and providing status report of each project and for the overall programme budget.
- Support with Logistics - Make flight bookings; prepare travel requests/authorizations, make travel/transport arrangements, as well as general coordination of logistics.
- Support knowledge management by managing and updating of the shared database
- Assist in compilation and updating of inventory of non-expendable items (for the Nairobi and Somalia Offices)
- Place requests for procurement and payments and follow up on progress reporting in a timely manner in case of potential delay.
- Ensure adequate and efficient support services for all meetings and conferences held in Nairobi
- Process both national and international staff and consultants visa applications.
- Prepare stationery requisitions for the office (Nairobi Office)
- Prepare consignment documents for airfreight/pouch/courier service for the Somalia projects and liaise with UNON on follow-up of these consignments.
- Maintain orderly files on on-going projects and project/programme

Education
Applicants must be pursuing qualifications in Human Resources, Organizational
Development, Business Management, Public Administration, or similar. Applicants must:1. Be enrolled in their third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree programme, or pursuing a Masters or PhD, or If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.2. Be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office applications3. Have a
demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal
commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include the
willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinion and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this
post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of candidates for this internship may include a substantive assessment which will
be followed by a written test and face-to-face or telephone interview. Potential candidates will be contacted by directly by the hosting office for further consideration.
