The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the
UN headquarters in Africa and the
representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme
implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements
Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya ,
by providing administrative, conference
and information services (www.unon.org). This post is located in the United Nations Office at Nairobi \Information and
Communications Technology Service, Resource
Management Section.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general guidance of
the Chief, Resource Management Section, the incumbent will be responsible for
the following:
1)
Develop,
test and implement simple computer application systems and programs using UN
established standards for IT technologies, programming languages and tools.
2)
Serve
as team member in the planning, specification, design, development,
implementation and support of computer application systems; independently
liaise with users to define and specify requirements.
3)
Install
computer application systems software and hardware according to specifications;
monitor computer applications systems using appropriate monitoring tools and
produces monitoring reports.
4)
Prepare
technical and user documentation for deployed computer application systems, as
well as training materials and conducts technical presentations.
5)
Maintain
functional specifications for computer application systems, programs and
procedures developed and/or modified.
6)
Provide
support for deployed computer application systems including version management,
data recovery and deployment to users’ offices; perform ongoing reviews with
users and developers and responds to users requests.
7)
Keep
abreast of developments in the field; performs benchmarking and proposes new
acquisitions.
8)
Provide
guidance to new/junior staff.
9)
Perform
other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES
Professionalism: knowledge of organizational information
infrastructure, including hardware, software and application systems. Knowledge
of relevant programming languages e.g. Delphi and Visual Basic and or
Java/JavaScript and ability to use programming skills to develop information
systems. Knowledge and experience using reporting systems as Crystal Reports or
any other reporting tool for generating reports. Show pride in work and in

deadlines and achieving results; Motivated by professional rather than personal

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or
equivalent. Supplemental courses / technical certificate in Information
Technology; supplemental training to keep abreast of changes in information
technology; an associate university degree or equivalent in computer science /
information technology is desirable. Knowledge of relevant programming
language(s) and ability to use programming skills to develop information
systems. Knowledge of system development workflow and document flow processes,
ability to conduct research and gather information from a wide variety of
standard and non-standard sources. Ability to respond to changing requirements
and assignments, ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments
given.
Experience:
7 years of experience in
information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and
maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area.
Language:
English
and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For
the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge
of a second official UN Language is an advantage.
