The International Livestock Research
Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of
poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a
global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a
food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs
in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia.www.ilri.org.

ILRI seeks to recruit a scientist to
contribute primarily to the CGIAR Research Program (CRP) on Livestock and Fish
and in particular smallholder dairy in India, but will support ILRI’s other
research activities in South Asia in other CRPs (e.g. Dryland Systems;
Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health; Policy, Institutions and
Markets; and Climate Change). The successful applicant will have specific
responsibility for managing and coordinating on-going projects as well as
initiating new projects.
Responsibilities
· Design and guide research activities
on the development of mixed smallholder farming and livestock value chains in
South Asia within the frameworks of the CRPs engaged in this region;
· Coordinate the development of
smallholder dairy value chain research in India within the context of the CRP
on Livestock and Fish;
· Contribute to other CRPs research
activities;
· Manage and coordinate ILRI’s
contribution to Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA);
· Manage and coordinate ILRI’s
contribution to the MilkIT project in India;
· Collaborate with ILRI scientists to
improve and apply tools and methods for analysing complex and fast evolving
farming systems, their respective value chains and their learning
environments in regard to relevant development indicators;
· Initiate and strengthen partnerships
with other CG institutes active in the region, national research and local
development and policy stakeholders for efficient research collaborations and
effective policy dialogue;
· Actively work with other ILRI staff
and partners to mobilize resources.
Requirements
· PhD in agriculture, animal science,
agricultural economics, development studies or related field;
· 5-7 years post-doctoral experience is
preferred;
· Detailed insight into research methods
related to relevant development indicators:
o
Quantitative
analysis of productivity indicators, livelihood, gender and value chain
performance;
o
Qualitative
assessment of social structures with a special emphasis on information,
innovations and institutions;
o
Initiation
and support of learning systems to foster and investigate sustainable change.
· Experience with research and data
management for efficient:
o
Survey
implementation; and
o
Monitoring
evaluation and reporting of project activities and outcomes.
· Project management capabilities to:
o
Supervise
and support team members;
o
Ability
to initiate and strengthen collaborations with a variety of partners;
o
Monitor
and manage project activities and resources;
o
Develop
project proposals;
o
Good
English language communication skills, for various audiences;
o
Donors;
o
Policy
stakeholders and general public.
· Proven record of scientific
publications;
· Familiarity with smallholder mixed
farming systems in developing countries with experience in livestock research
for development.
Position level: Scientist level 2 depending on
skills and experience.
Post location: The position will be based in
New Delhi, India.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of
renewal contingent upon individual performance and funding.
Terms of appointment: ILRI offers a competitive
