The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in
Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based
knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As
part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental
problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new
technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health.
The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in more than 30
countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We are supported by the Consultative Group on
International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and receive funding from over 50 different donors.

About the position:
To assess, monitor and maintain activities in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Manage day to day activities in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory including:
Preparing buffers
Updating laboratory protocols and manuals
Conducting viability tests for DNA and enzymes in storage
Sterilizing equipment and glassware
Following up on Health and Safety issues
2. Requisition required Molecular Lab reagents and follow up on their delivery
3. Maintain the Molecular Genetics Laboratory inventory
4. Conduct molecular genetic data analysis of tree species identified in consultation with the
supervisor and write a report of the analysis
5. Guide and direct PhD and MSc students and interns attached to the lab
6. Coordinate visits in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory including:
Explaining the molecular lab processes and procedures to the visitors
Identifying and providing relevant information to the visitors
Requirements:
BSc in Biotechnology or other related field. A Higher Diploma in Applied Biology will be an
added advantage.
Two (2) years’ experience in a busy molecular laboratory. 2
At least one (1) year of experience in managing a Molecular Laboratory.

will be for an initial period of three (3) years, subject to a six (6) months’ probation period. The
