1. Background
UNICEF Somalia’s Communication and
Education sections plan to introduce photography to the activities of Child To
Child (CTC) clubs at schools in Puntland and in South Central Somalia.
This will
provide an additional way to give young people a platform to explore issues of Child Rights, provide
them with a voice and progressively allow them to be change agents in their
families and their communities
The Ministries of Education
in each zone will select up to 10 teachers currently involved in the after
school Child-to-Child Clubs, who would be interested in teaching photography.
UNICEF aims to hire a freelance consultant photographer to train the teachers and
to work with two NGO partners in both zones on providing technical
support. After the course, the teachers
will be able to replicate the knowledge to children and work with them on
themes relating to their Rights and aspirations. Each teacher will be given two
cameras. The consultant will return six weeks later for a one day follow up
training and support.
The consultant will work with a focal
point from an NGO who will make routine visits to the schools to download, file
and transfer the photos to the consultant who will in turn provide to UNICEF a
selection that represents the themes and schools.
On another note, UNICEF would like to
engage the consultant in the development of four high quality multimedia pieces
on selected themes and UNICEF flagship programme to support fund raising and
donor visibility. The consultant will be expected to generate the photos and
audio-visual material for the multimedia. UNICEF will facilitate access to the
project sites.
The consultant is not expected to sit
in the UNICEF offices in Nairobi throughout the period of the assignments.
