Communications Internship

Goals and functions of the organization:
The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) – a member of the CGIAR Consortium – develops technologies, innovative methods, and new knowledge that better enable farmers, especially smallholders, to make agriculture competitive and profitable as well as sustainable and resilient. Headquartered near Cali, Colombia, CIAT conducts research for development in tropical regions of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. www.ciat.cgiar.org.
CGIAR is a global research partnership for a food secure future. Its science is carried out by the 15 research centers of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations.

Key areas within the strategy and the portfolio are farming systems intensification, reducing risk for vulnerable populations, and sustainable management of natural resources in landscapes to benefit the poor.

The Internship:
The International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is seeking a recent graduate for an internship program within the communication team to be based in Nairobi, Kenya. The Internship period will be three (3) months, renewable depending on performance and availability of resources. Interns at CIAT gain experience in international research for development, and are actively encouraged to use the internship as a stepping stone to further education.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Communications Specialist, the communications intern will support the implementation of CIAT’s  ommunication strategy in Africa to raise the profile, understanding and awareness of CIAT with partners, media and the public, and support internal communications.

Requirements:
 Bachelor’s graduate or at least third year university studies in communications or related field
 Possess excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including proven ability to capture and write compelling stories.
 Ability to communicate in a professional manner with researchers and media contacts
 Ability to work well independently, and within a team
 Excellent organization and planning skills, including keen attention to detail. Excellent knowledge of MS office applications, especially Outlook, Power Point and Excel, social media tools, and ability to learn new applications quickly
 Previous internship or related experience in media, marketing or  communications a plus.
 Ability for critical thinking and analysis of scientific literature a bonus.
 Understanding of CIAT, agricultural issues in Africa, and agricultural science is an added advantage.
