MSc Scholarships

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Uganda (IITA-Uganda) and the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) with support from USAID are implementing a project, ‘Enhancing climate resilience of agricultural livelihoods’. The project is working in partnership with another USAID-funded Activity, ‘Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation’, implemented by FHI360 in collaboration with Makerere University College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES). The NARO-IITA field research activities will link with the research and capacity building efforts of Makerere University’s Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI).

This partnership effort is offering scholarships available for two (2) MSc.  One each under the following thematic areas:

1) Generating agro-meteorological climate-risk analyses to inform decision-making at national, community, and farm level

2) Assessing what policies affect farmers’ vulnerability and adaptive capacity at the local level through stakeholder engagement, so as to create awareness, empower the farming community and trigger behavioral change of local policy actors.

Requirements:
  • A first degree (preferably First Class or Second Class Upper Division) from a reputable university in a field related to the above thematic areas.
  • Good command of English (spoken and written)
  • Computer skills is essential
  • Proof of admission and registration to the Masters Degree program at Makerere University in fields mentioned above
  • Experiences in experimental lay-out, conducting climate change adaptation research, data analysis and report writing are added advantages
  • Preference will be given to students who have or are about to complete their coursework

Scholarship and study/research conditions
  • Opportunities are open to female and male students and will be awarded purely on merit
  • Willingness to spend part of the study period in the Project sites is a critical consideration
  • Tuition and stipend and support to field/research activities will be provided.

Applications should include: application letter, copy of admission and registration to Makerere University, BSc academic transcript and updated CV (including contacts of at least two referees), and a one-page concept on the proposed research tailored to the thematic area of choice.
