PhD Schorlarship

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Uganda (IITA-Uganda) and the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) with support from USAID are implementing a project, ‘Enhancing climate resilience of agricultural livelihoods’. The project is working in partnership with another USAID-funded Activity, ‘Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation’, which is implemented by FHI360 in collaboration with Makerere University College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES). The NARO-IITA field research activities will link with the research and capacity building efforts of Makerere University’s Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI).

This partnership effort is offering scholarships available for three (3) PhDs under the following thematic areas:

A. PhD Crop Science:  Climate-smart Robusta coffee; understanding the biophysical and economic challenges and opportunities at plot level. 

B. PhD Geography or Environment and Natural Resources: Climate change adaptation, climate smart technologies:  Overcoming drought stress in key food crops, combining drought-tolerant germplasm with evaluating technologies for conserving, collecting, and supplying water.

C. PhD Agricultural Economist or Agricultural Extension:  Climate change adaptation at household and community level - diversification or specialization and the implications of control over assets.

Requirements:
  • Masters degree from a reputable university in a field related to the thematic area of choice
  • Good command of English (spoken and written)
  • Skills and knowledge in farmer and stakeholder engagement
  • Computer skills are essential
  • Experiences in experimental lay-out, conducting climate change adaptation research, data analysis and report writing relevant to the respective thematic area will be an added advantage
  • Previous working experience, preferably with research projects

Scholarship and study/research conditions
  • This opportunity is open to female and male students; candidates will be identified purely on merit
  • Willingness to spend part of the study period in the Project sites is a critical consideration
  • Tuition and stipend for up to four years with support to field/research activities will be provided.
  • Each project is expected to explicitly include a farmer engagement component, gender consideration,
and a youth outreach effort in addition to the science research focus.
