ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING AND REPORTING
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN
headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General.
We support programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and
the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN
offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information
services (www.unon.org). This post is located in the United Nations Office at
Nairobi, United Nations Information Centre (UNIC)
at the Nairobi duty Station, under the general supervision of the Director,
United Nations Information Centre – Kenya, Uganda and The Seychelles.
DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the
Chief of Visitors’ Service, the incumbent will be responsible for the
following tasks:
Conduct tour of the
United Nations Office at Nairobi
·Explain
the structure and current functions of the United Nations as well as rules of
procedure of the Principal Organs of
the United Nations and subsidiary bodies.
·Describe
recent actions taken by United Nations bodies, especially UNEP and UN-Habitat
and statements made by them or by the Secretary-General.
·Answer
questions, precisely and diplomatically, concerning political, economic, and
social matters connected with the work of the United Nations.
·Provide
historical information regarding UNON and its buildings, including the
significance of gifts donated by Member States and by other entities.
·Observe
visitors' behavior and traffic on the tour route and report any security and
safety concerns.
Conduct Special Tours
·Special
tour groups include new UN recruits, delegates, military personnel, visiting
affiliates such as NGOs and corporate executives, VIP guests, students from
elementary to graduate level, and people with disabilities.
·Provide
information adapted to the various cultural backgrounds, educational levels,
and special interests of the groups visiting.
Special Assignment
·Trains
new PIAs in languages other than English, if a senior PIA is not available in
that language.
·Evaluate
non-English language skills of new candidates, if a senior PIA is not available
in that language.
·Perform
other special duties, i.e. dispatches groups; takes reservations of language
tours in languages other than English via phone and in person; provides visitors
with information regarding the tour operation; and monitor the tour route for
any problems that might occur.
Preparatory Work
·Attend
briefings provided by the Service in order to keep abreast of current
developments and gets guidance on how to address certain issues.
·Review
press releases and other official UN information material for information.
·Maintain
up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political, security, humanitarian,
human rights and development issues by monitoring daily situation reports as
well as local and international news.
·Request
and attend special briefings from high-ranking UN officials/experts on specific
UN-related issues.
·Prepare
tours in languages other than English.
·Perform
other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications
Completion of secondary school education is required. Supplemental
courses in the field of public relations, marketing, communications, or other
relevant field are desired.
Experience
A minimum of three years of experience in public information
or public relations in an international environment is required.
Language Requirement
English and French are the working languages of the United
Nations Secretariat. For the post fluency in oral and written English is
required. Knowledge of French and Kiswahili are
desirable.
