Patoipa Partial Scholarship Program

Passion to illuminate pathways as an NGO endeavors to achieve a society that is self reliant. Education has been identified all over the world as a solution to many social problems, ranging from poverty, good governance, economic growth among others.
Kenya has in the recent past witnessed an upsurge in a young educated population- this is however yet to reach in far flung rural areas. Many children in the rural areas face numerous challenges of lack of fees, basic needs like food, access to better learning facilities just to mention a few.

Patoipa realizing the importance of education and how it can unlock potential of various communities, decided to initiate a partial scholarship program PAPSP which gives attention to those students whose parents are already taking initiatives to keep their children in school. After several trips in the field, our officers could not help but notice how such students have to skip classes due to lack of fees yet their parents have either paid some of it. This generally affects their final performance negatively. In turn all the little amount paid by parents lacks meaning.
Psychologically, being at home while your colleagues are in class affects the students self esteem in so many other areas.

OBJECTIVES OF PAPSP
TO OFFER PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP TO NEEDY SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
TO FACILITATE MENTORSHIP AND EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS TO YOUNG PEOPLE

So what does PAPSP do?
The program_ aims to link students with individual sponsors who are mostly willing to pay as little as 1500KES monthly to go towards the tuition fees. This totals to approximately 18000KES annually for an individual student.

The program as well engages the school administrators to try and pursue other mechanisms of the remaining fees payments that is to be paid by the parents. Since PAPSP payments are guaranteed- we constantly advice the principals not to send the student at home for the fee balances, but to engage the parents and let them pay whatever they have to go towards paying the balances. With such good relationship the program achieves its aims of ensuring as many students as possible join and remains in school.

PAPSP annual student conference- the conferences though not yet started, they are tailored to expose students to new ideas, interact and identify mentors from the industry, meet and have personal encounters with their perceived role models. The student annual conference will bring together students from all walks of life, to share their experiences, to exchange ideas, to nurture talents, listen to inspirational talks among other activities that will promote education outside school.

Also PAPSP in the middle and long term plans will set up a fund where various individuals can make donations to sponsor more students who do not have individual sponsors.

WHAT ARE THE SUCCESS OF PAPSP
In the last three months, PAPSP has seen TEN students secure sponsorships for tuition fees; among the nine some have their lunch paid for at school whereas others could receive school materials. Our intervention is yet to be felt at family level since our first payments just happened in October 2014.
