The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Social Scientist for Gender to contribute to gender and livestock research within the Markets, Gender and Livelihoods Research Theme under the Poverty, Gender and Innovations team.
Responsibilities
Position level: The position is Scientist 4C Level 1
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

Responsibilities
- Develop and test approaches and tools to increase the participation and benefits for women in livestock value chains
- Identify approaches to mainstreaming household gender considerations so that they inform the selection of technologies and practices for sustainable agricultural intensification
- Contribute to understanding gender differentiation within households and building innovation around household management partnerships results in solutions that are both more gender-equitable and more adoptable
- Contribute to a baseline study for increasing systems productivity, Natural Resource Management, and gender equity research by household typologies
- Doctoral course in subject area (Rural Sociology, Gender & Development, Agricultural Economics, Social Anthropology, etc) and post-doctoral experience of 2-4 years, or masters plus equivalent research experience
- A proven research record on gender and agriculture extending to study design, quantitative and qualitative analytic methods and peer-reviewed outputs
- Familiarity and or experience with aspects of livestock production, and/or agricultural systems in developing countries
- Experience with livestock and gender issues
- Excellent facilitation, interpersonal and networking skills
- Demonstrated ability to integrate gender into agricultural research projects and proposals
- Ability to synthesize and publish research findings on gender
- Ability to participate in the development of successful funding proposals
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and partner organizations
- Ability to manage budgets
- Ability to develop and facilitate processes and systems related to research outputs in gender
- Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in French is strong advantage)
- Willingness to travel frequently, often to rural areas in developing countries
- Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, in a developing country setting
- A sense of creativity and ability to work with minimal supervision
