Research Assistant – Road Safety Project

1. INTRODUCTION
Handicap International (HI) is an independent and impartial aid organisation working in situation of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity. Handicap International intervenes in difficult circumstances in order to prevent impairments and disabilities caused by disease, accidents or violence.

Handicap International views road safety as a means to prevent disability. WHO’s World Report on Road Traffic Injury states that globally, over 50 million are injured annually in road crashes.1 Many of those become disabled as a consequence. The impact of an injury on the individual, family and household is tremendous and deeply affecting.

2. CONTEXT ANALYSIS
Kenya loses over 3,000 people to road carnage annually, and many more are injured or disabled. As part of the effort to draw attention to the growing burden of road traffic injuries, the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) has partnered with Handicap International to pilot a research on the impact of injuries in Kenya. The proposed study will implement an innovative tool and data collection approaches developed by the JH-IIRU to assess the long-term social, economic, and health consequences of traumatic injuries in Kenya, with Handicap International providing on-ground support for the implementation of this study.

For this reason Handicap International seeks to recruit dynamic Research Assistants to participate in data collection for this research project over a period of 12 months. The project will be implemented in Nairobi County.
