Position Title: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Intern
Reports to: Senior Regional WASH Officer
Location: Kenya-Nairobi
Date: 5th June 2014

Background
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is currently seeking an intern to work with the Nairobi Regional Support Hub
(RSH). The Intern will support the RSH WASH unit to deliver support services to UNHCR country operations and other partner agencies within the region in addition to gaining exposure to emergency response for refugees.

About UNHCR Regional Support Hub:
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on December 14, 1950  by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action for the protection of refugees, its primary purpose is to safeguard their rights and wellbeing. The RSH provides operational support and advice to 12 core countries in East Africa, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) is a critical sector within UNHCR and in the region with significant implications for persons of concerns where indicators are not met and where expertise is not available to country operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As an intern, you will be based in Nairobi, in the UNHCR-Regional Support Hub (RSH), working directly with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Unit. The main duties and responsibilities will be to assist the WASH unit with:
·          Provision of WASH technical assistance to countries within the region
·          WASH trainings and workshop events
·          WASH Monitoring System data collection/analysis/gap identification
·          Preparing catalogue of best practice WASH designs and standard operating procedures from the region
·          Preparing best practice case studies and lessons learned from around the region
·          Researching new ideas and innovations in the areas of WASH and assessing applicability
·          WASH Information management
·          Perform other duties as required

Qualifications, skills and experience:
·          University degree in related subject; water and sanitation, hygiene and public health, civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resource management.
·          Experience with water, sanitation and hygiene or a related field in developing countries or humanitarian context;
·          Experience working in cross cultural environment. Experience dealing with multiple tasks in a courteous and service oriented manner
·          Experience in the areas of WASH assessment, programme implementation, monitoring and coordination.
·          Exposure to UNHCR mandate, its priorities and principles.
·          Analytical and creative thinking for rapid solutions
·          Good communicator with strong interpersonal and negotiations skills to deal with persons of various cultural and educational backgrounds
·          Strive to live up to high ethical and professional standards.
·          Team player with service oriented attitude
·          Proficiency in basic computer software such as MS Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Water modelling software, GIS, AutoCAD
·          Excellent writing and editing skills in English;
·          Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time and multiple tasks efficiently and have a positive attitude
·          Applicants must have be Kenyan citizens or have a valid work permit for Kenya.

Internship Information:
1.             Three-month period, ideally commencing on July 7th 2014, with the possibility of extension
2.             UN Internships are unpaid. The intern is responsible for their own travel, accommodation, medical
insurance and living expenses.
3.             Interns are not allowed to apply for a job within the UN Secretariat for a period of six months following
the internship.
