Rural Focus Limited (RFL) is a private Kenyan company based in Nanyuki, with a field office in Nairobi.
RFL works in a variety of fields, including building water security for communities and commercial enterprises, linking community managed water projects with micro-finance institutions, water development and management in arid and semi-arid areas, rural and peri-urban water supply and water
resource management. RFL works with public and private sectors, development organizations and research institutions to pilot and scale up innovative approaches to solve water resource delivery and
management challenges, and has undertaken projects in Eastern and Southern Africa.
RFL seeks a Project Officer to oversee a portfolio of projects in Kenya. The position will:
Report to: Director of Rural Focus Ltd
Location: Based in Nairobi or Nanyuki with a degree of field travel (approx 30%).
Salary: 100 – 150K p.m. (negotiable)
Position Summary:
Project Coordinator will manage a portfolio of up to five projects that will include development, implementation, evaluation and scale up components. The projects span a range of fields but generally relate to market based models of water service delivery in rural and peri-urban settings. He/she will work closely with the field staff to ensure effective support is being given to projects for attainment of the main objectives. He/she will also participate in management discussions and contribute to projects development and capacity building. He/she will liaise with stakeholders and be involved in marketing and research of innovative solutions. The position provides an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate make an impact on water service delivery challenges in Kenya.
Responsibilities:
The Project Coordinator will:
Keep RFL Directors and Project Partners appraised of all developments in the projects and serve
as key link between the field activities, projects staff and the Partners
Be the first point of contact for project activities management and support
Work with field staff to ensure sound human resource and operational management to adhere to
the general design of the projects.
Ensure that project deliverables, such as reports and financial statements, are prepared and submitted to partners and stakeholders on time.
Attend regular meetings with Water Service Boards, Water Service Providers, National, County
and Local government Officials, Partners and other stakeholders to ensure buy-in and success of
programmatic activities
Support the dissemination of results via presentations, publications and reports to academic and
non-academic audiences
Promote inter-project best practices and take a lead in external sharing of best practices through
formal and informal forums
Manage project budgets, including tracking project expenses and adherence to the project budget;
Manage both internal and external relations with the project teams
Assist in developing new project concept papers and funding proposals;
Mentor and directly supervise project staff and help with transitions, on-boarding of new staff and lead training on the project for new/incoming staff.
Other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications & Competences
Masters in a field related to water, public policy and/or development.
Bachelor’s degree in Water related field.
At least five years of relevant projects management experience, preferably in the water sector.
Experienced and interest in private sector/market based approaches to water and sanitation service provision.
Experience conducting social science research, with skills in survey design, supervising data collection and teams of field workers.
Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse communities is required.
Experience with presenting research findings at public forums, including to non-research focused audiences, is preferred.
Strong IT skills and interest in using IT to overcome water sector challenges
Proposal writing, budgeting and financial management skills.
Interpersonal, strong written and oral communication skills and complete fluency in English is required.
Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and a team player.
