FAO and National Geographic will choose photos that aim to raise global awareness on the importance of nutrition

The problems of malnutrition—under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity—exist in all countries, developed and developing, and across all socio-economic classes. FAO has just launched a worldwide photo contest which will run from now through to World Food Day on 16 October 2014. Aimed at raising global awareness on the importance of nutrition, FAO wishes to engage the general public in an international effort to improve nutrition. FAO is actively pursuing this kind of collaboration with world renowned associations who are socially and publically committed to issues commensurate with FAO’s mandate and who can reach the greater public at large. National Geographic is one such channel.
FAO is inviting participants from around the world, aged 18 and upwards to send their entries via the ICN2 Photo Contest website by 16 October 2014. Submissions will be judged by a panel made up of both FAO and National Geographic staff together.

A selection of the best 30 photos submitted will be made by the end of October. These will be placed on the FAO Facebook page from 1-18 November so that our followers (about half a million people) can cast their vote for the photo they like the best. The three photos that receive the most “likes” will win and the winners will be announced on the occasion of the opening of ICN2 on 19 November. The winning photos will be published on the ICN2 Photo Contest website and through the FAO social media channels. The authors of the final winning three images will be awarded prizes consisting of photographic assignments with FAO to an FAO project or country office close to the winner’s residence. Selected images from the contest will also be featured in FAO communication materials and social media channels.
