UNIDO is the
specialized agency of the United Nations based in Vienna, Austria. The mandate
of the UNIDO is to promote and accelerate sustainable industrial development in
developing countries and economies in transition. With this mandate, the
Organization carries out two core functions: as a global forum, it generates
and disseminates industry-related knowledge; as a technical cooperation agency,
it provides technical support and implements projects.
UNIDO operates
worldwide, with a number of Field Offices including one based in Nairobi. The
UNIDO Field Office in Kenya (FOK) works closely with private and public
sectors, the UN System and development partners in the delivery of the
organization’s mandate.
The Programme
Development and Technical Cooperation Division (PTC) is responsible for
providing technical cooperation services on technological and economic issues.
The Energy and Climate Change Branch (PTC/ECC) is responsible for the promotion
of access to energy for productive uses while at the same time supporting
patterns of energy use by industry that mitigate climate change and are
otherwise environmentally sustainable.
There are two
Units with the Energy and Climate Change Branch. The Industrial Energy
Efficiency Unit (PTC/ECC/IEE) is responsible for promoting continuous energy
efficiency improvement and the increased use of low carbon technologies in the
industries in order to accelerate economic growth and enhance competitiveness
in developing countries and emerging economies. The Renewable and Rural Energy
Unit (PTC/ECC/RRE) promotes the adoption of renewable energy sources in the
formal industrial sector, enhancing energy access primarily in rural areas as
the fundamental means to reduce rural poverty and championing industrial energy
perspectives in the global debates about climate change and other
energy-related global trends.
PROJECT CONTEXT
Electricity demand in Kenya is
significantly rising mainly due to the accelerated productive investment and
increasing population. Over 85% of the population relies on traditional fuels
such as wood, charcoal, dung, and agricultural residues for cooking and
heating. Moreover, Kenya relies heavily on imported petroleum for local
consumption. In 2007, Kenya imported 57,000bbl/day of crude oil. The primary
energy supply is dominated by indigenous biomass use, which mainly supplies
households and SMEs. However, many urban and rural areas are not reached by
grid-based electrical power, nor is there adequate distribution of gas or other
cooking and heating fuels. A weak transmission and distribution network, low
countrywide electricity access and over-reliance on hydropower which is
vulnerable to weather caprioles, are some of the challenges facing the
electricity sector. Significant opportunities exist for improving energy supply
in all sectors, in particular the industrial sector.
In response to the above challenge and
leveraging on its technical capacity in sustainable energy development, UNIDO
Energy Branch is in the process of developing several projects in Kenya funded
by bi-lateral donors and other institutions such as the Global Environment
Facility (GEF) in alignment with country sectorial policies, UNDAF and
MDGs.
Recently UNIDO launched a collaborative
global programme on “Low Carbon Low Emission Clean Energy Technology Transfer
Programme” jointly with the Government of Japan. The main objective of the
programme is to promote rapid deployment and dissemination of new low carbon
low emission clean energy technologies, products, services and systems
(L2CETs). The programme will develop and implement demonstration projects of
L2CETs under the identified country context. Sustainable technology transfer
will be achieved through demonstration projects, capacity building and
knowledge management, identification of suitable business models and
strengthening market conditions for L2CET investment in selected developing
countries. The other key UNIDO interventions include: 1) SHP mini grid project
in Kericho; 2) Biogas project in Dagoretti slaughterhouse 3) development of
GEF-5 waste to energy project; and 4) Community–based energy centres in various
places.
Under the direct supervision of the
National Project Coordinator (NPC), the incumbent shall be responsible for: 1.)
Developing a detailed marketing strategy and business development plan to
propagate the Ultra-Low Head Micro Hydro Power technology in consultation with
other experts; 2.) Conducting market potential analysis and prepare a report to
explore and establish local businesses and industrial value chain; 3.) Ensuring
establishment of marketing opportunities for ULH based MHP technology through
various business development related activities such as; awareness generation
and advocacy among local businesses, entrepreneurs, market leaders and
government agencies to deploy technology for market-based replication and
up-scaling; and 4.) All operational matters related to marketing and business
development. In achieving above objectives the MH-BDE will undertake networking,
coordination, awareness generation and capacity building activities linked to
the marketing of the technology among various stakeholder groups.
Working closely with Project Management
Unit (PMU), UNIDO Field office and other experts the incumbent will play a key
role in developing specific business development and marketing plan as
demonstrated in the energy supply system of the ULH-MHP technology project,
timely and effectively in conformity with the overall objectives of the
project. The incumbent will report the project progress directly to the
UNIDO-HQ Project Manager (PM), the FOK and/or project advisors on a monthly
basis. The incumbent will carry out domestic missions.
With expert knowledge of marketing and
business development of energy systems like micro hydro power in the region,
the incumbent will have the following responsibilities:
