The INTASAVE Partnership and CARIBSAVE: an Overview

The INTASAVE Partnership (InternationalSectoralApproach to Vulnerability and ResiliencE) is a global notfor-profit company, part of the INTASAVE-CARIBSAVE Group, with offices and operations in South Africa,Kenya, Asia, the UK and the Caribbean. INTASAVE works to support and enhance livelihoods, economies and environments around the world, particularly in less developed countries and small island developing states, within the context of a changing global climate. INTASAVE has evolved directly from the successful and replicable work conducted by its sister company - The CARIBSAVE Partnership - in the Caribbean and in response to a clear need to build capacity and provide practical strategies for effective interventions in the climate change and sustainability agenda globally.

The organisations are currently engaged in a wide range of large and small projects in over 30 countries
across the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Africa and Asia. These projects are categorised under six core themes:
 Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation: Enhancing the understanding of the effects of climate
change, and developing and implementing strategies to reduce vulnerabilities and increase the
resilience of countries, ecosystems, economies and communities.
 Society and Livelihoods: reducing poverty, building capacity, enhancing livelihoods and working with gender differentials and vulnerable groups through participatory engagement with communities, governments and the private sector.
 Education and Youth: empowering future generations to respond to the challenges and opportunity in climate change and sustainable growth.
 South-South Cooperation Knowledge Exchange and Development: working to create and exchange knowledge and good practice across south-south countries, regions and networks to develop capacity and capability to achieve climate resilience and sustainable development.
 Green Growth and Blue Economy: assisting and fostering sustainable environments and economies by partnering with communities, governments and the private sector in the incorporation of low-carbon development and effective terrestrial and marine resource management
 Climate Governance and Legislation: partnering with governments, regional institutions and key stakeholders, to support the formulation and implementation of national, regional and global climate change policies and programmes.

Examples of Projects include:
 Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia: Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR) This 5 year adaptation research initiative will deepen understanding of, and strengthen knowledge systems on, climate vulnerability and adaptation in semi-arid regions in Africa and Asia. It will help transform current adaptation practice to a mode that achieves proactive, widespread adaptation embedded in development activities at multiple governance scales, to advance adaptive livelihoods for vulnerable groups. INTASAVE is leading the knowledge management, learning exchange and transfer component (including research on climate adaptation communication barriers and enablers) as well as undertaking community based vulnerability assessments and the development of local adaptation plans of action across all case study sites.

 Global Islands' Vulnerability Research, Adaptation, Policy and Development (GIVRAPD) project integrates scientific and local knowledge from comparative ‘learning sites’ in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean by using a common community-based vulnerability assessment framework examining climate change impacts on livelihoods, tourism and fisheries.
 The Caribbean Fish Sanctuaries Partnership Initiative (C-FISH) aims to increase livelihood opportunities and resilience to climate change impacts in communities surrounding fish sanctuaries at 15 locations in 5 Caribbean states. The productivity of reef fisheries and value of marine resource for eco-tourism will also be increased. The project will establish a private-public partnership involving large companies in the tourism sector, governments, communities and regional institutions that will implement a framework of supporting activities and develop longterm financing mechanisms to support & encourage community-based co-managed fish sanctuaries that have been shown to increase the productivity of reef biodiversity of coastal ecosystems and their resilience to climate change.

The China and South-South Scoping Assessment for Adaptation, Learning and  evelopment(CASSALD) on climate change adaptation for ten South-South priority selected  developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, the countries included in the study were Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, Grenada and Jamaica.
