Training of Trainers in Life Skills Delivery Methods
Background
NairoBits Trust has been in
existence since 1999 and is registered as a Trust under the Laws of Kenya with
the aim of youth empowerment. Its target focus area is the youth from the
informal settlement areas of Nairobi which constitutes 60% of the total
population estimated at 7 million. They are largely underprivileged in terms of
the basic human needs including access to education and training with 50% to
70% of them living below the poverty line. The Trust envisages a situation
where 70% of the urban informal settlement youths access information
Communication technology (ICT) skills that would improve their employability
and ability to enter the labour market.
The Trust equips the youths
with knowledge in Web Design, IT skills, Creative Multimedia and
Entrepreneurship to improve their opportunities in employment or venturing into
Business. In addition, the Trust develops their character by inculcating in
them the critical elements of personal confidence and self esteem and also
train in life skills. NairoBits has over the years trained over 6000 youths who
have in turn been able to secure employment in both formal and informal
sectors, the success rate therefore can be considered to be at 90%.
Rationale
As the global and local
environments evolve, the coping skills is required to survive change. NairoBits
has had technical skills as the predominant focus of training thus far.
However, it is no longer viable to only have technical skills in an
increasingly interconnected world. Inter-dependence, cross ethnic and
cross-cultural interactions are prevailing trends that will only strengthen
with the increasing multimedia connectivity. As such, there is need for our
youth to have the necessary life skills to effectively handle these
interactions in order to survive.
NairoBits takes her clients
seriously and therefore has to proactively give them tools to have the best chance
of succeeding in life. Thus Nairobits put together a comprehensive, tailor-made
life skills curriculum that put into consideration our targets’ background and
the prevailing trends in the market.
While developing a
curriculum was commendable, the curriculum is only as good as it is delivered
to the intended recipients. Therefore, in 2011 Nairobiots organized a workshop
to enhance the capacity of the trainers to deliver the same effectively. In
2012, we would like to focus on soft skills necessary to survive in the
professional realm. This is the basis of this consultancy.
