GIS/ Remote Sensing Analyst & Data Systems Developer

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a globally networked research institute that works to help reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst with additional skills in data systems design into its Research Methods Group to provide support to ILRI research projects and institutional spatial and non-spatial data systems.
Responsibilities
Job level and salary: This position is job level 2C with a starting gross salary of KES 116,417 per month. The benefits package includes pension, medical and other insurances within ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff Scheme.
Location: The position will be based at the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya with travel to other countries where ILRI works.

Responsibilities
- To actively seek collaboration and opportunities to provide GIS and remote sensing data manipulation and analysis input into diverse multidisciplinary ILRI projects.
- Management, sharing and exchange of spatial data within ILRI and to collaborating institutions and maintenance of the database storing spatial datasets.
- Develop and maintain the GIS website running on Geoportal interactive mapping software.
- Design, develop and maintain spatial and non-spatial data systems for agricultural research and monitoring and evaluation.
- Design, develop and maintain web-oriented information systems for spatial and non-spatial data systems.
- To explore and suggest innovative ways to strategically use spatial information in agricultural research and monitoring and evaluation.
- MSc in Information systems, Computer Science, Data management, GIS and Remote Sensing or a related discipline.
- At least two years of relevant experience using information systems for the management and analysis of spatial (GIS & Remote Sensing) and non-spatial data in agricultural research.
- Knowledge of livestock systems, natural resource management and agricultural development issues in the tropics.
- Formal training and experience using Geographical Information Systems (preferably ArcGIS and Q-GIS).
- Formal training and experience using Image Processing Software (ENVI, ERDAS, IDRISI).
- Good knowledge of available regional and global environmental spatial datasets.
- Experience in developing and maintaining spatial databases on a web-based platform and use of relevant meta-data standards.
- Excellent English reading, writing and communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including skills in mentoring and capacity building, and ability to plan and prioritize work with minimum supervision.
- Good judgment and willingness to take initiative when appropriate
