Finance & Accounting Officer

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, and Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI will be working on a number of CGIAR Research Programs (CRP) that bring together CGIAR centers and partners from the research, development and private sector communities around the world.
The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a competent and dynamic Finance & Accounting officer.
Key responsibilities
Supervisory functions
  • Review and verify payments prior to approval.
  • Assist coordinate end of the month financial closing process.
  • Review bank reconciliations & other end month schedules.
  • Supervise banking operations.
  • Assist Finance Manager to manage cash, investments & foreign exchange risk.
  • Prepare cashflow forecasts.
  • Manage other debtors’ accounts and invoicing 3rd party Lab services.
  • Supervise filling of all  finance & accounting unit documentation
Staff & current accounts management
  • Maintenance of staff accounts that reflect correct position with respect to staff transactions.
  • Checking payment requests relating to staff account and personal travel, project advances, field imprests and workshops.
  • Reviewing of travel advances, imprests and workshops reports before posting the same in financial system.
  • Provision of statements for staff personal accounts and reconciliation of staff accounts.
  • Maintaining reconciled current accounts between Nairobi & Addis and ILRI & Kapiti.
  • Maintain up to date and reconciled schedules of Services and SDF Accruals.
Maintenance of Kapiti plains estate ltd ledger
  • Preparation of management accounts for Kapiti and monitoring Kapiti spend against budget.
  • Preparation of Kapiti budget.
  • Prepare end year Kapiti financial accounts and coordinate Audits including stock takes.
  • Review & verify payment vouchers, receipting and banking of Kapiti funds received.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of Aggresso Financial System in areas of responsibility.
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Economics.
  • Certified Public Accountant, C.P.A (K), ACCA or CIMA.
  • 6 years’ experience in finance with progressive experience in maintenance of accounting records up to general ledger.
  • At least 3 years in supervisory role.
  • Experience in staff accounts management, treasury management and preparation of financial statements.
  • Experience in implementation of financial systems solutions will be an added advantage.
Terms of Appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only.  The position is on a 2-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Job level and salary: This position is job level 3A with a starting gross salary of KES 181,393.00 per month. The benefits package includes pension, medical and other insurances within ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff Scheme.
Location: The position will be based at the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya.
