ROLE PURPOSE:
The Pharmaceutical Technologist is responsible
for the management of the SC medicines, medical supplies and related
equipment on behalf of the organization and the program team, making sure
that all required drugs are available and issued as per the SC drug
management and logistics guidelines. The role also involves liaising with the
county pharmacist and county health team in drug supply to health facilities;
strengthening of the county procurement, supply and management system; and
supporting the county health team in assessments and joint supervisions.

SCOPE OF ROLE:
Reports to: Program Health Coordinator
Dimensions: Save
the Children has been operational in Kenya since the 1950s, providing support
to children through developmental and humanitarian relief programmes
delivered both directly and through local partners. Current programming
focuses on child protection, child rights governance, education, health,
HIV/AIDS, livelihoods, nutrition and WASH. In 2012, as part of a global
reorganization process, Save the Children combined the programmes of SC UK,
SC Canada and SC Finland to create a single operation in Kenya. On Feb 1st
2014, we completed a second transition, joining forces with the British INGO,
Merlin, by merging their health and nutrition programmes with our own. Save
the Children has an operational presence in Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa, Mandera,
Meru, Wajir, and more recently Turkana – with plans to expand into Bungoma in
the course of 2014. We work through partners in many other parts of the
country. We have a staff complement of around 300 staff and an operating
annual budget of approximately US$25 million

KEY AREAS OF
ACCOUNTABILITY:
·
Ensures good inventory
management practices of the medicines and medical supplies, at all SC stores
and all SC supported facilities based on SC drug management and logistics
guidelines
·
Oversees the acquisition
(prepares drug orders) and disbursement of drugs and medical supplies to SC
supported facilities and SC field sites, under direction of the Program
Health Coordinator (PHC)
·
Ensures rational use of
drugs at all SC supported sites based on appropriate drug use
·
Conduct training of
dispensers and/or Nurses in other health facilities on good prescribing and
dispensing practices, and rational use of medicines
·
Ensuring maintenance of
cold chain
·
Liaises with Logistics
and/or Procurement department regarding drugs and medical supplies orders,
buffer stocks and distribution to the field sites / clinics in a timely
manner
·
Monitoring drug
consumption at SC medical store and at the SC supported Health facilities,
and submitting timely regular stock level and drug consumption reports to the
PHC
·
Keep records of serious
untoward incidents e.g. drug errors, poor quality, expired drugs as requested
by PHC
·
Keep up to date stock
records and information on stock of medicine and medical supplies with a view
of improving inventory management practices.
·
Receive orders for
medicine and medical supplies from health facility and primary health care
Nurse and distribute the supplies accordingly.
·
In collaboration with
logistician and Project officers, assist with receiving drug supplies
·
Prepares medicine needs
projections and submits orders to PHC
·
Support county health
team in county pharmaceutical assessments and supervision of health
facilities
·
Advocate for an enhanced
drug supply management system for the county

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Job Requirements:
·
Bachelor's
degree in Pharmacy or Diploma in Pharmacy from accredited institutions, by
the Pharmacy and Poisons Board with a minimum of 3 years’ experience directly
related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
·
Licensed
Pharmacist/ Enrolled Pharmaceutical Technologist
·
Computer
skills – excel and word (good)
·
Language
skills – English and Kiswahili, written and spoken (good)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
·
Knowledge
of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and
proper
administration.
·
Ability
to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
·
Knowledge
of policies, strategies and regulations pertaining to the procurement, supply
and management of pharmaceutical drugs.

of clinical operations and procedures.
·

to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
