Ubuntu Care Project Intern - Kitale

1. INTRODUCTION 
Handicap international (HI) is an INGO specializing in the field of disability and development. A strong emphasis is placed on empowering persons with disabilities and their representatives, through their full participation into mainstream development processes and the provision of appropriate and accessible social, health and rehabilitation services, in order to ensure equal opportunities for all.

Context Analysis
Handicap international is implementing a child protection project 'Ubuntu care: confronting sexual violence against children with disability in Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi'. In Kenya the project geographical coverage is Trans-Nzoia County. The project aims to address the root causes and mitigate the consequences of violence against children especially those with disabilities. Handicap International seeks to engage volunteer to contribute to the project implementation process as well as learn from the great experience Handicap International is extending towards this important project.

During the Volunteer period of engagement, the volunteer is expected to work closely with the project team to realize the following objectives;

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE INTERNSHIP 
1The objectives of the internship are:
1. Support in the implementation of project activities as indicated in the implementation plan
2. Support in the collection and compilation of data.

Tasks under objective 1: 
• Actively take part in planning and organizing of the project activities.
• Assist the project officer in follow-up of activities by partners such as the school program.
• Assist with follow-up of beneficiaries identified by partners
• Offer creative ideas for activities for recreation, education and well being of children especially those with disabilities.
• Provide draft reports for activities attended.
• Participate in making follow up in implementation of action plans developed during trainings.

Activities under objective 2: 
• Assist with the collection and compilation of data and information provided by partners.
• Support partners to properly fill the data collection tools provided.
• Ensure confidentiality regarding cases of children registered in the data.
• Ensure that participant’s lists for forums and seminars are collected and the data considered in the report and in the data base.

Outputs
• Reports of activities and trainings attended.
• Properly filled data collection tools. 
• Adherence to deadlines 
• Final internship report.

3. HANDICAP INTERNATIONAL’S RESPONSIBILITIES 
• Orientation of the intern to understand the History, vision and mission of the handicap international as well as the current projects.
2• Provide opportunities for the intern to gain hands-on experience in project implementation, monitoring, child protection, gender and disability through direct involvement with project activities and partners
• Capacity building of the Intern through participation in trainings and workshops organized in the context of the project.
• Support the intern to perform his/her duties as outlined in the TOR.
• Provide an office space for operations
• Facilitate the intern with transportation means to the field during the internship period 

4. SERVICE DURATION AND LOCATION 
The Internship will initially be for a 3(three) months period commencing 17th March, 2014 and the intern will be based in Kitale - Trans-Nzoia County . The Intern is to comply to the Staff Regulations ruling the work environment. Working hours will be: Monday to Friday 8.00 am -1.00pm; 2.00pm -5.00pm.

5. REQUIREMENTS 
• Holder of or currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in law, sociology, psychology or any other social sciences from a recognized institution. 
• Ready to gain hands on experience for at least 3 month
• Experience with child rights focused organizations will be an added advantage
• A letter of recommendation from previous employer or school if currently studying
• Have a valid personal insurance cover
• Strong organizing and interpersonal skills
• Computer and internet literate
• Should be a self-starter and able to equally work with minimal supervision.
• Learning attitude

36. RESOURCE PERSON
Within the framework of the service provision, the intern will be asked to collaborate with Handicap International’s teams and in particular with the Child protection project officer and the child protection project manager who will be the point of contact.
