All Africa House Fellowship at University of Cape Town in South Africa, 2013

Five fellowships are funded by all Africa House (AAH) for young or mid-career African based academics at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. The tenure of the fellowship is three months from 2 September to 2 December 2013. Applicants must be young or mid-career teacher with not less than 5 years of experience and have a master’s degree. Africa fellowship criteria for selection are academic excellence. The deadline for applications is 15 July 2013.

Study Subject (s): The fellowship is awarded in any available subject offered by the UCT in South Africa.
Course Level: The fellowships have been established to enable the Fellow to: develop courses and teaching materials; and/or write up completed research for publication.
Scholarship Provider: The fellowship programme is funded by the University of Cape Town.

Eligibility: Only applications submitted by the following academics at African universities outside of South Africa will be considered:
(a) A young or mid-career teacher in the employment of the home university who has less than 5 years of experience as a university teacher, with good academic record and a minimum qualification of a Master Degree;
(b) A national of the country of the home university; and
(c) A person whose area of work falls into one of the areas of work of UCT hosts listed in paragraph 10.


Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Applicants must be academics at African universities outside of South Africa to be considered for this fellowship. Scholarship Description: All Africa House (AAH)1 is offering five fellowships to five young or mid-career2 Africa based academics with a good academic record to come to the University of Cape Town (UCT) and develop their courses and teaching materials and/or write up completed research for publication. The fellowships are tenable for 3 months. Successful applicant(s) will be required to take up the fellowship from 2 September to 2 December 2013. The Fellows will be hosted by All Africa House in collaboration with senior academic members of staff in the different faculties of the University. The Objectives of the programme are to:
(a) Contribute to the intellectual and broad social development of young academics on the African Continent; (b) promote research and capacity building in universities on the Continent;
(c) provide the Fellow with an opportunity to write and publish, and to benefit from the intellectual dynamism of UCT’s Faculties, as well as from the University’s relatively extensive library resources;
(d) provide the Fellow with the opportunity to develop courses and teaching materials and/or write up research under the eye of a senior academic at UCT;
(e) facilitate the Fellow’s engagement with UCT’s intellectual community about his or her work through the presentation of seminars at AAH or in his/her host faculty; 1All Africa House is an academic visitors’ residence at the UCT. It is designed to provide self-catering accommodation in a scholarly environment. The intellectual life of AAH includes public and post graduate seminars that are convened by the Warden of the House. (f) provide the Fellow with opportunities to interact and network with both national and international visiting scholars residing in AAH;
(g) foster interaction between UCT academics and their counterparts from other African countries, with a view to learning more about each other’s educational system, teaching and research environments; and
(h) to address two of the many challenges facing teachers and researchers in African universities: the serious problem of resources and capacity to develop courses and teaching material, and the lack of opportunities for academics to write and publish.

Number of awards (s): All Africa House (AAH) is offering five fellowships to five young or mid-career Africa based academics.
Duration of award (s): The fellowships are tenable for 3 months. Successful applicant(s) will be required to take up the fellowship from 2 September to 2 December 2013.
What does it cover? The fellowship covers the following expenses:
(a) Single self-catering accommodation in AAH. Breakfast will be provided in the AAH Dining Room;
(b) Medical insurance coverage for international visitors;
(c) Subsistence allowance of R296 per day;
(d) Return airfare; and (e) printing and photocopying (in fellowship business), and freight upon departure from UCT to the home country at the end of the fellowship.

Selection Criteria: The assessment of applications is made on academic merit by a selection committee, which has discretion to consider other relevant factors. The decision of the selection committee is final.
Notification: The successful applicant must present original copies of all documents requiring a signature to the Warden of AAH upon taking up the fellowship.
