IDRC Research Awards for Canadians and Developing Countries’ Students, 2014

Each year, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) offers research awards for citizens of Canada and developing countries who have completed a master’s or doctoral degree at a recognized university. Approximately 16 awards will be offered in 2014 on a full-time basis for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months. Research award recipients will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic they submitted when competing for the award. Most research awards positions are based at IDRC’s head office Ottawa, Canada and one of IDRC’s regional offices. Application deadline is August 7, 2013.

Study Subject (s): Research award positions offered by IDRC: Agriculture and Food Security, Canadian Partnerships, Climate Change and Water, Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia, Communications Division, Corporate Strategy and Evaluation Division, Donor Partnerships Division, Ecosystems and Human Health, Global Health Research Initiative, Governance for Equity in Health Systems, IDRC Challenge Fund, Information and Networks, Non communicable Disease Prevention, Risk Management and Internal Audit, Supporting Inclusive Growth and Think Tank Initiative.

Course Level: As a research award recipient, applicants will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic they submitted when competing for the award. During part of the time (often around 50%), applicants will be trained in research management through hands-on experience with their chosen program.

Scholarship can be taken at: Most research awards positions are based at IDRC’s head office Ottawa, Canada. A few take place in one of IDRC’s regional offices (Cairo, Egypt; Nairobi, Kenya; New Delhi, India; Montevideo, Uruguay).


Eligibility: To be eligible, you must meet the following requirements:
-Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of a developing country.
-Be either currently enrolled at a recognized university at the master’s or doctoral level or have completed a masters or doctoral degree at a recognized university. These awards may be part of an academic requirement.
-Your proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries.

Scholarship Description: IDRC offers these research awards annually to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing master’s or doctoral studies at a recognized university or having completed a master’s or doctoral program at a recognized university. As a research award recipient, you will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic you submitted when competing for the award. During part of the time (often around 50%), you will be trained in research management through hands-on experience with your chosen program. You will be mentored by an IDRC staff member.
Number of award (s): The number of awards varies each year. Approximately 16 awards will be offered in 2014.
Duration of award (s): Research awards are normally held for 12 months. They are tenable, on a full-time basis, for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12. They normally start in January and must be completed by the end of December.

What does it cover? Research award recipients holding award tenure in Canada in 2013 receive an annual salary ranging from CA$38, 248 to CA$44, 276, depending on qualifications and experience. As research award recipients, you are considered to be full-time term employees of the Centre. Benefits include contributions to Employment Insurance, Employer Health Tax, the Canada Pension Plan, and 4% of salary in lieu of vacation leave. Some travel and research expenses are also supported, up to a maximum of CA$10, 000. Salaries and benefits for research award recipients located in our regional offices may vary.

Selection Criteria: The following criteria will be used to evaluate applications:
-The relevance of the research and training proposal to the IDRC’s programming unit’s specifications (on the Competitions’ page see the section titled Details on research award positions offered by IDRC’s programming units)
-Relevance to sustainable and equitable development
-Fit with IDRC priorities
-Overall appropriateness, completeness, and clarity of the research and training proposal
-Overall feasibility, duration, and timing of the research
-Originality and creativity of the research
-Gender implications of the research
-Ethical considerations of the research
-The applicant’s capacity to conduct the proposed research and training, including academic training, local language capacity, and related experience
-Whether the applicant has received another IDRC award. (Candidates cannot receive more than one IDRC award in a given year.).

Notification: Awards will be announced in November 2013.

-Select one of the Research award positions offered by IDRC. You may only choose one.
-Complete the application online.
-Your application must be complete, and received at the Centre by the deadline. Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.
-Your application should be submitted in English or French ONLY (Canada’s two official languages).
