Veterinary Officer

Diocese of Lodwar in pursuit of its vision ‘ A community of God’s People united by the Holy Spirit, dedicationg our lives to Christian Service to fight poverty and disadvantage’ while working in partnership with DFID Trocaire ASAL Resilience Programme in Loima(ARP – Loima) is seeking to recruit qualified persons to fill the following positions.

The ARP – Loima Project is a DFID Trocaire funded project for three – year intervention focussing on building livelihoods’ resilience among pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities in Karemunyang and Turkwell in Turkwkell Division and Lokiriama, Lorengippi and Namoruputh in Loima Division (Loima District).

Background to the Role
The livestock component of this project includes direct support for livestock health in the form of mobile animal health services, including disease surveillance and vaccinations. As the legality of para-vets is an ongoing challenge we will include a formally qualified vet within the mobile health team to certify the work of a number of para-vets. The project also provides for the establishment of agro-vet units in each of the locations, operated and supervised in the same manner. This element will be linked to the Hunger Safety Net Programme through exploring the provision of vaccination credit under the mastercard system.

Description of Position
Lead the livestock health component of the project. This will include the coordination and overall supervision of disease surveillance, vaccinations, operation of mobile health teams and agro-vet units. The Officer will be responsible for liaison with other organisations active in this field within Turkana.
Location: Lodwar with travel throughout Turkana county

Major Duties & Responsibilities:
 Manage the delivery of activities intended to realise output 1 of the project logic model to the highest possible standards.
 Oversee and coordinate the establishment of mobile animal health services.
 Coordinate the provision of a programme of livestock vaccinations
 Organise and manage the surveillance of local livestock diseases.
 Certify the work of para-vets associated with the project.
 In conjunction with the Trocaire ARP Senior Programme Officer, research and establish links with the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP) to provide livestock vaccinations under the mastercard system.
 Provide technical support to the Field Monitors as they mobilise and train communities to adopt new breeds and practices.

Qualifications, Attributes and Other Requirements Specific to the Role
 BSc in Veterinary or its equivalent
 Skilled in MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
 Ability to manage heavy workloads, to multi-task and to meet deadlines
 Ability to work both independently and in a team.
 Fluent written and spoken English, Kiswahili and knowledge of Ng’aturkana will be an added advantage
 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
 Dynamic and willing to take initiative
