Gender Specialist

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (www.ciat.cgiar.org) works to reduce hunger and poverty, and improve human health in the tropics through research aimed at increasing the eco-efficiency of agriculture. The Center’s research focuses on improving key crops (cassava, common bean, rice, and tropical forages); reversing soil and land degradation; and using information to foster better decisions about issues such as climate change and environmental management. Headquartered near Cali, Colombia, CIAT has regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and Hanoi, Vietnam, with staff posted in other developing countries as well.

The Gender Specialist will collaborate closely with, and support PABRA's multi-disciplinary teams including NARS scientists of the three bean-based research for development networks in East, Central, South and West Africa and the efforts of the Grain Legume CRP in Africa. The position will make strong gender-related contributions to enhance the impact of beans on food security, nutrition and poverty reduction in benefiting increasing numbers of women, children and men. The aim is to develop gender sensitive, productive, equitable and sustainable technologies and approaches, and render them accessible to women and men farmers. The position will provide expert input on gender issues to diverse CIAT/PABRA disciplinary teams and stakeholders, enabling them to strengthen the gender- responsiveness in CIAT/PABRA's research for the development agenda. The position will support gender mainstreaming in PABRA including research design, implementation, collection, analysis and communication gender disaggregated data to inform the program. The position will also be responsible for undertaking research on gender issue in Grain Legume CRP and CIAT/PABRA.

Responsibilities:
 Implementing strategic and applied research activities related to gender themes in CIAT / PABRA and the Grain Legume CRP.
 Providing technical assistance to collaborators and partners on integrating and mainstreaming gender into R&D programs and assure implementation the gender strategy.
 Training and creating awareness of CIAT/PABRA and CRP partners (staff and partners) in gender-related skills, tools, and conceptual frameworks.
 Building quality partnerships with institutions working on gender.
 Participating in annual planning, execution and review of activities and priorities within the R&D framework of both PABRA and the Grain Legume CRP.
 Support the development, application and monitoring of gender indicators in outcomes and impact assessment activities.
 Contribute to mobilization of resources in support of the gender research agenda of the Grain Legume CRP and PABRA

Requirements
  Ph.D. in Rural Sociology, Anthropology, Agricultural Economics, Social Geography.  Minimum 3 years of experience providing technical support for research and development (R&D) implementation in Africa, related to gender and agriculture.
 Good analytical skills.
 Strong strategic and applied gender research skills, as well programming and project development skills.
 Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
 Working effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
 Ability to travel extensively.

Terms of employment
The position is internationally recruited and based at CIAT Offices in Nairobi or Arusha. The initial contract will be for two (2) years, subject to a probation period of three (3) months, and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
