ILRI seeks to recruit an Internal Auditor to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting services designed to add value and improve ILRI’s operations by bringing a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of governance, risk management and control processes.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and Southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia.www.ilri.org.

Key responsibilities:
  • Appraise the potential risk areas  to be included in strategic plan and the annual risk based audit plan, determine the audit approach and prepare the audit program by describing tests to be conducted;
  • Survey functions and activities in assigned audit areas to determine the nature of operations and the adequacy of internal control systems and procedures and conduct the audit in a professional manner; develop and organize the audit working papers, keeping all information confidential;
  • Discuss the findings, observations, and recommendations of the draft audit reports with the audit clients;
  • Conduct complex Financial; Operational; Compliance and Governance; and Risk Management audit projects.
  • Prepare coherent and concise audit reports  on the audit findings and observations and make practical recommendations for the areas requiring improvements;
  • Appraise the adequacy of the corrective actions taken to improve deficient conditions by following-up on agreed audit recommendations;
  • Review and evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of management controls in the institute operations;
  • Plan and review the Institute’s administrative, operational and financial activities in accordance with accepted professional standards and approved audit plan;
  • Determine whether the organizational units in the Institute are performing their activities including planning, accounting, custodianship etc. and control activities,  in compliance with the institute policies, standards and procedures.;
  • Undertake a special investigations, or other related audit tasks as agreed with the Head, Internal Audit
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, Accounting, IT or related field from a recognized university with at least second class-upper division;
  • Complete Professional accounting training with certification such as CPA (K), Chartered Accountant (CA), ACCA;
  • Full qualifications as a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA);
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or equivalent is desirable;
  • At least 6 years’ experience in internal auditing, preferably in a busy international not for profit organization;
  • Demonstrates knowledge of  auditing standards  and practices, risk management, and applicable financial rules and procedures;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of computerized accounting and auditing systems;
  • Being alert to significant risks that might affect objectives, operations or resources;
  • Strong assertive communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to gather, analyse and evaluate facts, and ability to assess and identify business risks;
  • Effective listening skills, and ability to remain calm in stressful conditions;
  • Display a positive and confident attitude and maintain good relations with management and staff, without compromising the quality of work.
Terms of appointment:
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) positions based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is for a two year contract period; renewable subject to availability of funds and individual performance. Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided by ILRI.

Job level and salary:
This position is job level 3A and starting salary is KES 173,617 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.
