 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Geographic Information Services, and in close collaboration with the Geographic Information Officer/Assistants, the Geographic Information Officer NPO will provide timely and reliable GIS related services to all UNSOA components as per the mandate and be responsible for supporting the mapping & geospatial information initiatives at UNSOA GIS Section in Nairobi.

The incumbent will be responsible for the following principal duties:
  • Engage in the timely preparation, maintenance and provision of geographic information and maps in support of  operations;
  • Assist in the sharing of geographic data with other offices of the mission as well as field offices of other UN agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other collaborative partners;
  • Collect, process and evaluate geospatial data including vector, raster and thematic data;
  • Compile large-scale operation maps and small-scale briefing/report maps;
  • Conduct terrain analysis studies and prediction of the effects of terrain, weather and situation on operations;
  • Assist in performing quality control (QC) on all products generated and disseminated by the Section including data and maps;
  • Assist in providing GPS & GIS training and education programmes for staff;
  • Assist in managing the technical work of junior National staff;
  • Perform other duties as required

In-depth knowledge of the latest technological developments in geographic information, image processing, Global Positioning System (GPS) and web applications. 

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Advanced university degree in Cartography, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or related fields. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Additional studies or practical experience in Geographic Information Systems issues are highly desirable.
Experience:
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in geographic information (ex. geographic information system integration, geographic/terrain analysis, image processing, mapping, GPS, geo-spatial related information technology, etc.) or related fields required. Work experience with UN field operations would be an asset. Experience working in a multinational environment would also be an asset. Strong knowledge and experience in imagery analysis, interpretation and manipulation is highly desirable. Direct experience with geographic information applications, especially in Terrain Analysis, would be an advantage. Knowledge and extensive practical experience of the following GIS software is essential: ArcGIS (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView and its extensions); ERDAS Imagine.
Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.

Other Skills:
Excellent computer skills, working knowledge of office automation software and practical knowledge of information technology (IT) are desirable; Knowledge and practical experience of the following software is essential: Microsoft Office, ArcGIS; Other software such as RDBMS (Oracle, Informix, MS SQL Server, Access etc.);MapInfo, Adobe Illustrator, etc. is desirable.    

Other:            The individual must be able to work effectively in a small team but also have proven ability to work independently on projects where necessary.
