Study Nurse (ART Nurse)


Terms of employment: Contract for 1 year, renewable. Probation period for the first 3 months.
Duty station: Kombewa District Hospital.

JOB SUMMARY
The holder of this position will serve as a site study nurse for the “African Cohort Study“ (AFRICOS) study. AFRICOS is to be conducted by the Kenya Medical Research Institute/Walter Reed Project (KEMRI/WRP) HIV Program in Kisumu in conjunction with the Henry Jackson Foundation-Medical Research International (HJF-MRI). The AFRICOS study nurse will be primarily responsible for the overall conduct of the study under the auspices of the AFRICOS Principal Investigator (PI) and overall AFRICOS Study Coordinator based at the KEMRI/WRP HIV Program in Kisumu. The study nurse will be expected to be a member of HIV clinic and work with the staff there.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND TASKS:
1. Work to ensure that AFRICOS study is implemented at each site under the auspices of the study PI and overall AFRICOS Study Coordinator according to the AFRICOS protocol documents and according to Good Clinical Practices (GCP).
2. Complete all necessary GCP and regulatory training requirements prior to study initiation at each site.
3. Work with the local site HIV program leadership and staff to ensure the study is conducted in a manner consistent with routine HIV clinic practices.
4. Organize and oversee study briefings for interested participants.
5. Oversee and/or directly conduct informed consent for all study participants.
6. Oversee and/or directly conduct study transcription of data from the participant medical files into AFRICOS case report forms (CRFs).
7. Oversee and/or directly conduct participant remuneration for study related activities as outlined in the protocol and approved by the KEMRI Ethics Review Committee.
8. Ensure study related laboratory specimens are appropriately collected and transported to the KEMRI/WRP Clinical Research Center laboratories in Kombewa, Kisumu or Kericho.
9. Oversee and/or assist in routine clinic activities related to routine standard of care including but not limited to obtaining patient vital signs (i.e. blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, temperature); height and weight; phlebotomy/collection of laboratory specimens; review of laboratory results; scheduling appointments; and, assisting the clinic team in tracking patients lost to follow-up.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:
1. Conduct other activities as deemed appropriate by the AFRICOS PI, overall Study Coordinator, or site HIV clinic leadership.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
a. Kenya Registered Nurse/Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse
b. A minimum of 2 years of practice in area of training; field or clinical research experience is desired
c. Registration by the Nursing Council of Kenya
d. Good computer skills ( with good working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing)
e. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Luo is an asset
f. Good interpersonal & communication skills, good team player
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:
Incumbent will work under the guidance of the AFRICOS PI and overall Study Coordinator in conjunction with the site’s HIV program and clinic leadership and under the supervision of the HJF-MRI leadership

Work Environment:
Primarily Kombewa district hospital HIV clinic (approximately 80% of time once study is initiated); KEMRI/WRP HIV program offices in Kombewa (approximately 20% of time); both may vary based upon AFRICOS study activities and needs.
