Cultural Orientation Trainer

The Resettlement Support Center (RSC) Africa operates a US refugee resettlement program in sub-Saharan Africa through a Cooperative Agreement with the Department of State/Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. RSC Africa is responsible for the preparation of refugee case files for adjudication by Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) officers, as well as the out-processing and cultural orientation of all approved cases. RSC Africa is administered by the Church World Service International Refugee Program (CWS/IRP) and is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
RSC Africa seeks four qualified applicants for the Cultural Orientation Trainer position. This position is pending FY 13 budget approval.
Position Description:
This position is primarily responsible to provide cultural orientation training to refugees approved for resettlement to the United States. Trainings take place in urban and camp locations, often under difficult work conditions. This position works closely with other members of the Cultural Orientation Department.
The position is supervised by the Cultural Orientation Senior Trainer.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Maintains a current knowledge of the US and US Refugee Admissions Program.
2. Prepares for cultural orientation circuit rides by reviewing information about participants tobe trained, developing lesson plans specific to those participants, gathering necessary training materials and printing class lists and name tags.
3. Conducts cultural orientation in urban and camp locations throughout Sub-Saharan Africa for a diverse caseload and varied curricula.
4. Assists the CO Field Team Leader for assigned circuit rides with the logistical planning and implementation as directed.
5. Updates Worldwide Refugee Admissions System (WRAPS) to reflect participation in CO.
6. Participates in circuit ride briefings and debriefings.
7. Assists with the development of resources for the CO Department as a whole, such as training materials, Highlights and Backgrounders on refugee populations, in-house staff development training and others.
8. Performs other duties which may be assigned by the Senior Trainer or CO Regional Coordinator to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of the CO program RSC Africa | U.S. Refugee Admissions Program
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree OR professional teacher training Diploma/Certificate OR a minimum of 3 years working in a related field
• Minimum of 2 years work experience in any or a combination of the following:
o Training experience
o Field work carrying out program activities Logistical experience with field missions
o Technical experience in database systems utilized by RSC Africa to facilitate partner
activities and internal RSC operations.
• Relevant experience in the United States strongly preferred
• Experience in working with refugees preferred
• In possession of a valid Kenyan passport
• Strong written and verbal English skills
• Ability to speak Amharic, Somali, or French preferred
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Ability to maintain high performance standards with attention to detail
• Ability to exercise good judgment and seek guidance as appropriate when confronted with unanticipated problems
• Ability to travel frequently in Sub-Saharan Africa on short notice and often under difficult conditions
• Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the internet
• Ability to work as part of team in a multi-cultural environment
• Ability to conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times to represent the professional and institutional interests of Church World Service/Resettlement Support Center Nairobi
