The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia. www.ilri.org.

ILRI seeks to recruit a dynamic Head for its newly created unit for Business Development initiatives. The Head of Business Development will play the lead role in ensuring that the growing demand for livestock research in development countries is translated into new investment into ILRI’s research portfolio that builds on our strengths and partnerships.
  • Develop an institutional strategy and implementation plan for broadening the investor base of the organization, and successfully develop substantial funding streams, in line with ILRI’s new Corporate Strategy;
  • Actively grow and maintain the Center’s networks with investors and enhance cooperation with donor governments through personal contacts and consultations to identify further scope for research for development activities;
  • Develop and implement an investor communication strategy in collaboration with the Public Awareness and Research teams;
  • Act as institutional contact point for resource mobilization issues, including providing input into day-to-day communications with donors regarding grants and institutional fundraising
  • Ensure the highest quality of proposal development and compliance with both institutional and investor requirements ;
  • Develop, implement and supervise internal processes and procedures to support researchers in the development of high quality research proposals;
  • Provide overall management and supervision of the Business Development unit, including recruitment and management of staff, oversight of unit budgets, and oversight of management of databases for investor intelligence and grant development.
Requirements
  • Advanced degree in business administration, non-profit management, communications, or related degree plus equivalent experience;
  • Proven experience in fund raising for international organizations in developing countries, including playing the lead role in generating large grants;
  • Experience in program management and leading teams, and strong administrative, communication and public relations skills;
  • Excellent networking skills and proven ability to work with a large number of partners/stakeholders;
  • Extensive personal network among investors supporting agricultural development and research in development countries.  Direct experience in a donor agency would be an advantage;
  • Experience working with multinational and multidisciplinary teams.
Post location: Nairobi, Kenya.

Duration: 3 years, with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

Position level: The position is equivalent to Scientist/Research Level 3, dependent on qualifications and experience.
