The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI seeks to recruit a Field team leader for a research project focused on understanding the emergence of zoonotic pathogens in urban environments. The project takes a “One Health” view of human and animal health, and will involve questionnaire administration and collection of biological specimens from humans, livestock, peri-domestic mammals and birds, as well as from the wider environment and the food chain. The incumbent will take responsibility for the daily organization and planning of a complex field operation, arranging timetabling and co-ordinating a team comprising veterinary, medical and social science expertise. The incumbent will also be an integral member of the field team, and will take on responsibilities for sampling and data collection in the field, along with the rest of the team.
Key responsibilities
Job level and salary: This position is job level 1C with a starting gross salary of KES 61,556 per month. The benefits package includes pension, medical and other insurances within ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff Scheme.
Location: The position will be based at the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya.

Key responsibilities
- Represent the project with participants in the study area, and maintain good relations with study participants, local authorities and other stakeholders.
- Day to day management of field activities, including timetabling, vehicle logistics, sample delivery, consumables supply.
- Assume responsibility for daily and weekly reporting of progress to project management on behalf of other members of the field team.
- Undertake examinations of, and collect biological samples from, livestock, the environment, and peri-domestic species in the study area.
- Ensure accurate recording of data in the field.
- Ensure timely delivery of field samples to the laboratory.
- Collect biological samples according to project protocols.
- Assume responsibility for delivery of samples to the laboratory, checking in of samples and data management.
- Maintain records of the homes and participants visited.
- Take care of the project resources.
- Willingness to spend sometimes long days in the field.
- Any other duties that may be assigned by the senior project staff.
- A diploma holder in Animal Health or other related field with application to animal health.
- A Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience.
- Knowledge and experience in field based projects with a “One Health” or zoonotic disease theme.
- Experience in formal training (eg certificate level) in team management.
- Significant practical experience of team management.
