Substance abuse counselor (addictions counselor)


Position: Substance abuse counselor (addictions counselor).
Reporting: Project Coordinator.

The addiction Counselor is responsible for providing confidential addictions counseling, education and support to individuals, families and the community and for promoting health lifestyles and healthy choices.

Key tasks and Responsibilities.
1.      Provide counseling to individuals regarding the use and effects of alcohol and drugs
2.      Provide counseling to pregnant women about the effects of drugs and alcohol on the fetus.
3.      Assist Injecting Drug Users to understand the risk of their behavior.
4.      Provide group counseling to Injecting Drug user and other drug users.
5.      Ensure legislation, standards and guidelines are being followed
6.      Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all clients, conversations and referrals.
7.      Provide community education and support.
8.      Assist individuals to identify their need for treatment programs and offer treatment as required.
9.      Manage and administer the alcohol and drug support program.
10.   Create and maintain current and accurate records of the numbers of clients served and the issues.

Education and Experience
1.       Diploma in addiction counseling.
2.       At least 2 year experience working in a rehabilitation centre
3.       At least 4 year experience working as a counselor
4.       A degree or diploma in psychological counseling an added advantage.
5.       A team player with good communication skill.
6.       Be patient and work under minimum supervision
