APHRC RCS and PDRH Positions



The African Population and Health Research Center, Inc. (APHRC) is an African-led and African-based international research institute engaged in interdisciplinary, evidence-based policy research. Our researchers address important issues and challenges facing Africa in areas such as education, health, population, urbanization and wellbeing. We engage with policy makers in the region to disseminate our research findings and influence change affecting the quality of life in Africa. We also support doctoral level training in Africa to strengthen research capacity in the region. The Center has over 40 research staff trained in the fields including anthropology, demography, health economics, education, sociology, public health, medicine and statistics.
APHRC would like to fill the following four vacancies
1) Program Leader, Population Dynamics and Reproductive Health (PDRH)
The Population Dynamics and Reproductive Health (PDRH) Research Program aims to provide scientific evidence and articulate policy and program priorities for sustainable population growth and improved reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa. Research in the Population Dynamics Program is categorized into four sub-thematic areas namely, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Fertility and Population Growth, Maternal and Child Health, and Monitoring and Evaluation of Population and Reproductive Health Programs.
Role:
  • Define and drive the strategic direction of the Program
  • Lead the program in fundraising for projects
  • Provide leadership in the implementation of projects, define resource needs and allocate staff time, and ensure that resources are used effectively, including reviewing of project expenditure reports
  • Ensure that all project deliverables are met according to expected standards and in a timely manner
  • Review and sign-off staff performance appraisal of staff under the Program
  • Ensure cohesion and shared vision amongst program projects and staff
  • Support the planning and implementation of country and regional dissemination workshops
  • Identify in-country partners to build country and regional capacity in monitoring and evaluation of population and reproductive health programs
Qualifications and Experience
  • PhD in Demography, Public Health or a related discipline and at least seven years of post-doctoral experience with focus on population, family planning and reproductive health in developing countries, in general, and sub-Saharan Africa, in particular
  • Proven experience in conducting large, national quantitative data collection at the household and facility levels
  • Strong writing skills and good record of publications on population, family planning and reproductive health in developing countries
  • Proven ability to work effectively with both funding agencies and with national and local personnel
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience in providing leadership in an academic or research institution
  • Strong quantitative skills
2) Associate Research Scientist, Research Capacity Strengthening (RCS) Division
Role:
  • Assess internal research training priorities based on needs and available resources
  • Support the design, delivery and evaluation of internal research training activities
  • In collaboration with the CARTAProgram Manager:
    • Support the design and delivery of CARTA training programs
    • Coordinate evaluation of CARTA training programs
    • Monitor fellows’ progress
  • Contribute to proposal development, literature review, and scientific writing
Qualifications and Experience
  • PhD in any social science or public policy
  • Good writing skills
  • Strong proposal writing skills and experience
  • Experience and interest in developing and implementing institutional research capacity building skills
  • Experience working in an academic or research institution
  • Ability to interact with senior members of institutions
 
3) Post-doctoral Fellows, RCS and PDRH
Role:
  • Contribute to proposal development, literature review, and scientific writing
  • Participate in the design of scientific research and training tasks within the division
  • Assist in the implementation of projects
  • Participate in the dissemination of program findings to appropriate audiences and with preparing project progress reports to donors
  • Data management and analysis.

Qualifications and experience
  • PhD in demography or related field
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good scientific writing skills
Additional requirements for the RCS Post-doctoral position
  • Strong interest and 2 years’ experience in research capacity building activities
  • Experience working in an academic institution, will be an added advantage
Additional requirements for the PDRH post-doctoral position
  • strong interest in the area of family planning
  • Good skills in data management and analysis.
The above positions come with an attractive, internationally-competitive remuneration package including medical, travel and life insurance cover. Allowances toward in-relocation and dependents' education are also provided. For all positions, preference will be given to nationals of sub-Saharan African countries. Post-doctoral fellowships are taken up within two years of completion of doctoral degree.
