Climate Impact Modeler


The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (www.ciat.cgiar.org) works to reduce hunger and poverty, and improve human nutrition in the tropics through research aimed at increasing the eco-efficiency of agriculture. CIAT is a member of the CGIAR Consortium (www.cgiar.org), a global research partnership working many partners for a food secure future. The Center’s research focuses on improving key crops (cassava, common bean, rice, and tropical forages); reversing soil and land degradation; and using information to foster better decisions about issues such as climate change and environmental management. Headquartered near Cali, Colombia, CIAT has regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and Hanoi, Vietnam, with staff posted in other developing countries as well.

The Climate Impact Modeler will be expected to bring new thinking in the area of climate change and position CIAT's climate change research and findings in the region. The role will facilitate the consolidation of the climate change group and enable a successful interaction with the CCAFS team, other CGIAR centers and partners in Asia. Furthermore, the expert will ensure the continuous knowledge transfer between CIAT HQ and the regional CIAT office in Vietnam and vice versa.
The position will be based at CIAT's Asia Regional Office, Hanoi, Vietnam.

Responsibilities:
 Overseeing and implementing ongoing climate change research projects and assure their outcome, impact and publication of results
 Coordinate ongoing and jointly develop and implement new research projects with the regional CCAFS office, CGIAR centers, other partners and the new Asia theme on sustaining farming systems and building resilience of agro-landscapes.
 Assure knowledge and method transfer from CIAT HQ to the regional office and partners and vice versa

Requirements
 Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, Agriculture or Geography
 Experience working in developing country agricultural context, particularly South East Asia and willingness to travel in South East Asia as needed.
 Excellent networking capabilities with a range of different stakeholders
 Good communication skills both written and oral, the ability to work in multicultural teams and across organizational boundaries
 Ability to conceptualize, lead and implement work in climate change and related topics, which includes familiarity with the current state of knowledge relevant climate change
 Demonstrate ability to identify research problems and apply a range of tools to address them, including an analytic capacity to distill key insights from large amounts of information
 A demonstrated writing / publication record on climate change and related issues
 Strong language skills in English and proficiency in additional Asian and/or Spanish desirable

Terms of employment
The position is internationally recruited and based at CIAT Offices in Hanoi. The initial contract will be for two (2) years, subject to a probationary period of six (6) months, and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
