The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health.

About the position:
The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow / Research Fellow to join the
Research Method Group (RMG) to strengthen the Centre’s analytical capacity in livelihood and
poverty analysis. The Fellow will work in an interdisciplinary and multi-cultural environment
under the guidance of Senior Researchers in ICRAF to:
Work closely with economists, sociologists, political scientists, and nutritionists to design
research approaches and instruments to quantify the impact of agroforestry on poverty and
livelihoods.
Align ICRAF’s poverty and livelihood assessments with existing global data collection efforts.
Lead the development of a tool kit to support development of survey instruments across
different projects and regions.
Work closely with the data managers within the group to develop automated workflows for
aggregating and analysing multi-country household data.
Engage in discussions on comparative research and methodologies within ICRAF.
Work on internationally peer-reviewed and other publications and on their presentation at
workshops and meetings.
Requirements:
PhD in fields related to development economics, quantitative sociology, human geography or
interdisciplinary fields such as coupled natural and human systems.2
Strong background in survey design, measurement theory, evaluation, index construction, data
analysis and livelihood assessment.
Familiarity with use of economic and spatial data and datasets, including panel data.
Operating knowledge and experience with modeling techniques and econometrics, and
advanced knowledge of the R statistical environment.
Strong interpersonal skills and good personal organization skills required.
Strong communication skills in written and spoken English. Knowledge of Spanish or French
will be an added advantage.
Terms of offer:
We offer a collegial, diverse and gender-sensitive working environment, and we strongly encourage

appointment will be for an initial period of two (2) years, subject to a six (6) months’ probation
period. The position will be based in ICRAF Headquarters in Nairobi.
