Job Summary

The organization serves the Church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Assistant Driller will work within South Sudan, mainly in the Unity State area with possible travel to needed areas. The main responsibilities will include operating a variety of water well drilling rigs such as rotary (compressed air and fluid/mud), percussion/cable tool, reverse circulation and auger drilling. The Assistant Driller will record drilling progress and drilling information such as driller’s log, select and install casings and other well fixtures. The Assistant Driller will also be responsible in placing gravel, developing wells, constructing well protection structures, treating and disinfecting wells and in pump testing.

Key Responsibilities
·         Select the appropriate drill for the job, using knowledge of rock or soil conditions;
·         Operate controls to stabilize machines and to position and align drills;
·         Select and attach drill bits and drill rods, adding more rods as hole depths increase and changing drill bits as needed;
·         Regulate air pressure, rotary speed, and downward pressure, according to the type of rock or concrete being drilled;
·         Operate machines to flush earth cuttings or to blow dust from holes;
·         Assemble and position machines, augers, casing pipes, and other equipment, using hand and power tools;
·         Perform routine maintenance and upgrade work on machines and equipment, such as replacing parts, building up drill bits, and lubricating machinery;
·         Verify depths and alignments of boring positions;
·         Start, stop, and control drilling speed of machines and insertion of casings into holes;
·         Record drilling progress and geological data and extract core samples. Inspect core samples to determine nature of strata, or take samples to laboratories for analysis;
·         Drive trucks, tractors, or truck-mounted drills to and from work sites;
·         Monitor drilling operations, checking gauges and listening to equipment to assess drilling conditions and to determine the need to adjust drilling or alter equipment;
·         Retrieve lost equipment from bore holes, using retrieval tools and equipment;
·         Place and install screens, casings, gravel, pumps, and other well fixtures;
·         Disinfect, reconstruct, and redevelop contaminated wells and water pumping systems, and clean and disinfect new wells in preparation for use;
·         Pour water into wells, or pump water or slush into wells to cool drill bits and to remove drillings;
·         Perform pumping tests to assess well yield;
·         Ensuring the training of national staff in technical areas including drilling skill, installation of pumps, casings, etc;
·         Monitor the events/outputs to ensure the timely completion of the drilling project;
·         Producing maintenance and service schedule of drill rigs and vehicles;
·         Make sure that weekly/monthly reporting is completed on time and is fully detailed.
·         Ensure the project will satisfy the needs of the beneficiaries;
·         Travel to areas of high need and assist with other Samaritan’s Purse water projects in South Sudan;
·         Attend daily morning devotions and participate in prayer support for the ministry, its donors and volunteers;
·         Maintain a strong Christian witness to colleagues, vendors, charitable beneficiaries, and the general public;
·         Assess, manage, and report critical physical, emotional, or spiritual concerns of supervised staff;
Education / Experience Needed
·         Completion of 2-3 year water well drilling apprenticeship program or equivalent experience in water well drilling;
·         At least 6 years’ work experience in water well drilling or similar role;
·         Skills in plumbing work; welding and similar works is an added advantage;
·         Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

·         Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ;
·         Able to be diplomatic in communications with all NGOs, governmental, and community partners;
·         Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in an ever changing environment;
·         Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of church leaders from all denominations;
·         Ability to speak or quickly learn Arabic and/or Dinka, preferred.

12 month contract with the potential for renewal
