II. Organizational Context


Given the challenging context of Somalia, OCHA will continue to play a key role to support the Humanitarian Coordinator in mobilization and coordination of an effective and principled humanitarian response. OCHA is particularly concerned that vulnerable communities and those at risk from natural disasters and conflict receive humanitarian assistance and protection, which meet their assessed needs and enable them to rebuild sustainable livelihoods. OCHA Somalia maintains an office in Nairobi and a strong field presence inside Somalia with the primary objectives of OCHA Somalia including the following:

1.       Advocate for access to basic services, especially water, sanitation, education and health for vulnerable communities, including collection, analysis and dissemination of information and negotiation of access.
2.       Coordinate the implementation of humanitarian response in Somalia with UN agencies and programmes, national and international NGOs and local authorities/communities as appropriate with focus on strengthening the Cluster Approach.
3.       Enhance a protective environment that respects human rights of all, including IDPs, returnees, and minority clans.

To support the Nairobi Support Office, OCHA is looking for the services of a messenger to provide messengerial services in support of the Nairobi activities.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Administration & Finance Officer, the Messenger provides reliable messenger services.

The Messenger demonstrates a client-oriented approach, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.




III. Key Functions:

£      Messenger services

£      Effective mail management

Provides efficient messenger services focusing on achievement of the following results:

§  Collection and delivery of mail and other materials as required from and to the post office, government agencies and other institutions.
§  Sorting, delivery and pick up of mail from various offices on the premises at regular intervals. Maintenance of records as required.
§  Packaging/packing of material received for dispatch; labeling, inserting material in envelopes and franking outgoing mail.
§  Photocopying, scanning and duplicating services.
§  Ensures the offices are maintained in clean conditions by liaising with the cleaning company.
§  Other duties as required.

 

IV. Impact of Results


The key results have an impact on the accurate and timely execution of the OCHA Somalia services.




V. Competencies

VI. Recruitment Qualifications

Education:

Completion of secondary education.


Experience:

2 years work experience. Experience with the UN or other international organization will be an added advantage.


Language requirements:

Good knowledge of English and the national language of the duty station.



VII. Terms of Service 

This is a non-staff contract under the Service Contract modality of hiring of the OCHA. Individuals engaged under a Service Contract serve in their individual capacity and not as representative of a government institutions, corporate body or other authority external to OCHA. The incumbent shall not be considered as staff of OCHA, the UN common system or the government and are therefore not entitled to any diplomatic privileges or any other special status or conditions.
