Background:

VSF Germany is an international Non-Governmental Organization, providing humanitarian aid and development assistance to pastoralists and vulnerable communities in areas where livestock is of importance.  In the region, VSF Germany implements activities in South Sudan, North Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia.  With support in animal health, agriculture, marketing, food safety but also with developing the capacity of communities and governmental institutions or initiating peace and conflict resolution, we work towards food security and strengthened livelihoods of pastoralist communities.

We seek to recruit two (2) qualified and well experienced Field Veterinarians to support implementation of project activities in Maban County, Upper Nile State, South Sudan.  These are field based positions and the successful candidates will be based in Maban County.  The Field Veterinarians will work in collaboration with the Project Manager, community stakeholders, County Veterinary departments & partner organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

•       The Field Veterinarians will be responsible for implementing the livestock component of the projects.
•       Permanently monitor activities and report progress to the Project Manager.
·         He/She will be required to identify, supervise and provide training to the Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs), Animal Health Auxiliaries (AHAs) within the projects.
·         Conduct community dialogue meetings to raise awareness on Zoonoses.
·         Maintain close contacts with Animal Health staff both private and government.
·         Monitor livestock diseases (surveillance) and report disease outbreak to government veterinary authorities through the Project Manager.
·         Coordinate the procurement of veterinary supplies and equipment for local veterinary stores.
·         Provide professional support on technical aspects to local veterinary health teams.
·         Develop work plans, financial projections and verify all financial reports on the respective component.
·         Manage the flow of technical reports and compilation of the same in the project narratives.
·         Respond to cross cutting issues affecting the community in cooperation with specific expert agencies.
·         Establish and maintain good work relationships with local authorities, community and other stakeholders within and outside the project areas.
•       Provide business training to community based veterinary drug store owners.
•       Support the Project Manager in conducting baseline surveys and project development

Qualifications, Experience, Attributes & Skills required:
•       University Degree in Veterinary Medicine/Animal Health
•       A minimum of 3 years working in Livestock related Rural Development Projects
•       Knowledge in epidemiology and participatory disease search
•       Knowledge and experience of working with pastoral communities
•       Excellent knowledge of pastoral market issues
•       Excellent computer knowledge
•       Excellent managerial and report writing skills.
•       Knowledge of Donor Funds Management and Reporting.
