The Position
This position would be part of the ILRI Research Methods Group (RMG) that provides institutional and project level support in research design, data management, analysis and reporting, and Geographical Information Systems. The post holder will maintain, update and provide ILRI spatial data and associated metadata to ILRI projects and partners.
Key responsibilities
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. The position is on a 2 year contract with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
Job level and salary
This position is in job Grade 2B with a starting salary of KES 83,606. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.

Key responsibilities
- Management, sharing and exchange of fully documented spatial data with standard metadata within ILRI and to collaborating partners;
- Provision of GIS and remote sensing data management, analysis and presentation to diverse multidisciplinary ILRI projects;
- Updating and maintenance of the web interactive geoportal platform for sharing spatial data to internal and external users;
- Other duties as required to support RMG activities.
- BSc. in GIS and Remote Sensing, Geo-informatics, Geomatics or related subject;
- At least two (2) years relevant experience in the application of GIS and Remote Sensing, preferably in agricultural research;
- Demonstrated experience with GIS and Remote Sensing software: ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ERDAS or ENVI;
- Experience in developing and maintaining spatial databases with corresponding standard metadata;
- Working knowledge of an open source GIS software, preferably QGIS, an advantage;
- Knowledge of Python scripting with ArcGIS an advantage;
- Experience with any web-based GIS platform online publishing system an advantage;
- Knowledge of available regional and global environmental spatial datasets an advantage;
- Excellent English reading, writing and communication skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to plan and prioritize work with minimum supervision.
