Assistant Child Protection Officer

Job Description and required qualifications
Under the Supervision of the Child Protection Officer, the incumbent will assist in the implementation of refugee child protection activities ensuring compliance with relevant child protection standards including children’s participation and will be the perform the following functions:
 Assist in implementation of the refugee child protection strategy;
 Assist in monitoring developments in the implementation of the refugee child protection strategy and ensure congruence with national and international child protection strategies;
 In coordination with HRTK psychosocial staff, assist in specific child protection activities including identification of children at heightened risk and effect appropriate intervention through activities such as alternative care arrangements, birth registration etc.;
 Assist in follow-up and monitoring individual case status
 Assist in coordinating and overseeing the best interest assessments and determinations (BIA and BID) process including presentations to the BID Panel;
 Assist in implementation of decisions relating to refugee children made by the BID and psychosocial panels;
 Assist in research and capacity building activities and conduct training on refugee child protection;
 Assist in maintaining up-to-date individual case files, data and information relating to refugee child protection and progressively generate appropriate periodic reports on trends and activities;
 Assist in providing support to caseworkers in the tracking of individual cases, updating status, and maintaining child protection database; and
 Liaise with and support partners in refugee child protection through activities such as capacity building, and inform and participate in relevant network and coordination forums;
 Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: University degree in law (LLB) a must, good knowledge of human rights doctrine, child rights and/or extensive field experience in refugee law.
Skills and competencies
 An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
 Computer literacy a must with strong knowledge of MS Office
 Good knowledge of human rights doctrine, refugee law, child rights and protection;
 Strong research, capacity building, analytical and report writing skills;
 Data handling skills and previous exposure to database a plus;
 Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills;
 Strong organisation skills
Experience: No less than three years work experience, including at least 1 year working with children, preferably with an NGO. Experience working in the field of refugee protection and assistance a distinct advantage.
Languages:
Proficiency in English and Swahili, knowledge of French a plus
