Research Technician – Biosciences

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Technician to provide support in the development of thermostable vaccines.

ILRI works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia. http://www.ilri.org/.

Background
The Animal Bioscience Program is one of the Bioscience research programs at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The main focus of the Program is genetics, genomics, epidemiology and diagnostics of important livestock species (cattle, pigs, camel, sheep, and goats) and diseases (Trypanosomiasis, East Coast Fever, African swine fever, Peste de Petits Ruminant and Zoonosis). The bulk of the research is done in Africa and has the potential to impact the rest of the world with the aim of improving food and nutritional security.

Responsibilities
  • Maintenance of cell lines, production and quality control of vaccine virus and lyophilisation of the vaccine lots.  Conduct thermostability, residual moisture and quality control evaluations.
  • Interaction with project partners to implement project work plans.
  • Tracking of supplies and insuring that sufficient quantities are available for planned work.
  • Preparation of requests for cell culture and vaccine production materials. Liaison with ILRI administration to assure timely delivery of orders and maintenance of equipment.
  • Management of the laboratory space to maintain appropriate bio-security and working environment.
  • Complete quality control tests on vaccine lots
Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biological science.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in cell culture
  • Good planner with ability to prioritize tasks
  • Creativity and ability to work under minimum supervision
Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus.  The position is on a 2 year fixed term contract.

Job level and salary
This position is job Grade 2B with a starting salary of KES 83,606.00. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
Location: The position will be based at the ILRI, Nairobi.
