Field Assistant – IITA

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia. www.ilri.org.

The Position
This position will be based at IITA, Nairobi. The Field Assistant will participate in some of the field activities and enable movement of project staff across the various project districts in the country as well as assist in logistical operations within the project.

Responsibilities
  • Represent the project alongside other participants in the study area, and maintain good relations with study participants, local authorities and other stakeholders;
  • Day to day management of field activities, including timetabling, vehicle logistics, consumable supply, sample collection and delivery;
  • Assume responsibility for daily and weekly reporting of progress to project management on behalf of other members of the field team;
  • Assume responsibility for delivery of samples to the laboratory and checking in of samples.
  • Maintain records of the homes and participants visited;
  • Take care of project resources like vehicles, field consumables, and office assets among others.
  • Assist students and project scientists with data analysis;
  • Keep records of the leaves and events for the field staff;
  • Participation in field experimentation lay out;
  • Participation in field data collection exercises and treatment of fields;
  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services;
  • Day to day maintenance of the assigned vehicle including cleanliness;
  • Ensuring timely servicing of vehicle and acquisition/renewal of all necessary licenses/insurance;
  • Maintaining a clear worksheet on vehicle usage in terms mileage and fuel consumption;
  • Any other duties that may be assigned by the senior project staffs;
  • Availability of documents/supplies for project and IITA office.
 Requirements:-
  • Basic knowledge in field data collection and management of  experimental  fields;
  • Valid Kenya Driver’s license;
  • At least 5 years of driving within Nairobi and in the field;
  • Must have a certificate of good conduct;
  • Conversant in English and Kiswahili;
  • O’level certificate.
Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus.  The position is on a 2 year contract with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
Job level and salary
This position is in job Grade 1C with a minimum start salary of KES 45,019.  This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
Location: The position will be based at the IITA, Nairobi.
