UNFPA Somalia Country Office is providing support for relevant government ministries and humanitarian actors engaged in reproductive health, gender, young people and population data for development. To achieve UNFPA’s mission, we engage in communication and advocacy activities with a range of stakeholders. Stories from the field; detailing the importance of humanitarian response, the impact on people’s lives, the successes that have been achieved, and the obstacles that are faced; play a crucial role in helping to raise awareness and motivate people to take action. In order to realise this, objective communication is one of the main strategies employed. A series of engagement and mobilisation initiatives with communities have been conducted by various UNFPA partner organisations in all the three zones of Somalia, but the need to harmonize the key messages disseminated has been identified. This is critical in order to ensure the quality of UNFPA intervention as well as to disseminate appropriate and culturally-sensitive information. Therefore, UNFPA Somalia Country Office is seeking a Communications Associate to support the communications department in communication and advocacy work for the office and its partners.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Communications Specialist the incumbent will carry out the following functions:


The main role of the Communication Associate is to support in the development of a comprehensive package of IEC materials for the UNFPA country office. The Communication Associate will support the Communications Specialist in:

- Formatting, packaging of programme documents in close collaboration with programme staff to ensure that they meet high-quality standards, in accordance with UN policy objectives and rules and regulations, and are evaluated for their effectiveness; - Designing regular publications including newsletters, donor reports, civic education and community awareness where appropriate to support projects - Videography, photography and documentation of field work - Train field office colleagues on documentation.
- Any other communication-related duties to support UNFPA mandate areas
 

Job Requirements
Education:

 Completion of Secondary Education, preferably with relevant combination of technical training and experience in communications specific to design, layout art, visual imaging and photography.
 A first-level university degree in communication, media, journalism, international relations, management, public administration or relevant field would be desirable, but it is not a requirement.
Knowledge and Experience:
 A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in communications or related area specific to design of IEC products graphic designing, visual image or photography at the national or international level is required ;
 

Languages:
Good command of English language, both written and spoken is essential. Knowledge of Somali language will be an added advantage.

Functional Competencies:
1. Identify basic principles of design (unity, contrast, proportion, etc). 2. Identify basic color theory. 3. Identify associations, properties, and perceptions of color. 4. Prepare a series of differing thumbnail sketches for a printed piece 5. Identify the sources for graphics and photographs (clip art, stock photos, promo photos, DIY, art direction/shoots). 6. Demonstrate understanding of the principles of print advertising design. 7. Demonstrate understanding of the principles of brochure design 8. Identify steps in the psychological model of the creative process (analysis, incubation, inspiration, verification) 9. Explain major methods of creativity (brainstorming, free association, provocation, bite system, reversal). 10. Identify major methods to deal with creative blocks. 11. Understand photography principles
 

Other Desirable Skills:
Able to work effectively under tight deadlines, knowledge on layout artist and video editing is also desirable
